Dear Friend,
You have probably seen or heard quilters talk about paper piecing. Or maybe you have read something about paper piecing online, but weren't sure exactly what it was or how to do it.
Maybe you have listened to the quilters in the fabric shop who said it was easy. You read the directions, looked at the pattern, and didn't believe it could possibly be that easy.
For years I avoided paper piecing because it sounded like it might be confusing, too difficult, or even cheating - like it's not really making a quilt.
See if this Sounds Familiar
Then one night I was faced with a project, and I couldn't back out.
For many years, several of the "moms" at the elementary school my kids went to met in the evening to quilt, usually on our own projects. But, every once in a while someone would come up with a project for all of us.
One time we all brought an assortment of fabric to make Christmas Tree blocks. Each of us chose a pattern and then at the end of the evening, we traded blocks, so we had an assortment of tree blocks to make a quilt. That was a great idea, and I put the quilt together - many years ago. It is still waiting for trim around this big, wide border space before I can layer and quilt it.
Another time, we each made a quilt block with a theme for a book. Then we sewed them together for the school librarian. That was a fun project.
Then someone came up with an idea to make a paper pieced quilt, I was shocked! After all, we had only ever done traditional patchwork quilts. And I don't know about you, but trying something new with my precious fabric and time isn't something I usually did.
I liked to stick with quilting that I know a lot about. Something that is comfortable, and I would be proud of, and that I would like to share with my family and friends. I've grown up a bit since then, and will try many different things, but that was the way it was when I was first learning to quilt.
Nevertheless, I was stuck. Our quilt group agreement was that we had to try the project, whatever it was - no poor sports.
She had told us ahead of time what kind of fabric to bring. And I dutifully had it with me. I didn't even have that as an excuse not to try this new technique.
The kids were safely at home with their dad. He wasn't going anywhere. I didn't have that as an excuse. This was years before cell phones, so I couldn't signal him to call me with some emergency. No excuse there, either. I was stuck. I had to do it.
Cindy was completely organized. She had foundation patterns for each of us, and they were all ready to use. All we needed to do was follow her instructions.
So, we dug in. She explained everything in great detail. And showed us each step along the way - from cutting the fabric, to pinning it on the paper, then sewing it to the paper, then folding the fabric down to get ready to sew on the next piece.
She showed us how to set the stitch length on our machines and cut the fabric so it would be the right size for the foundation - not too small so the seam allowance was shortchanged or too big so there were gobs extra.
She showed us how to sew each individual block to the next block so our finished wall hanging would be all squared up. Then she showed us how to add borders. From there, we were on our own. The evening was over, and we all went home with our completed little wall hangings (minus the backing and finishing).
But, the point is, that once she showed us exacly what to do and how to do it, it actually was really easy. And the wall hanging came out perfect. The paper added so much stability, that it was almost impossible to make a mistake.
And it can Work for You, too!
I know, because her method has worked for thousands and thousands of people just like you. As a matter of fact, realizing the paper piecing seems to be very popluar these days, I purchased a DVD showing how to paper piece, and that professional quilter uses exactly the same method my friend, Cindy, taught me almost 19 years ago.
Because paper piecing is so popular, I decided to share that skill with you. I took all of the good paper piecing ideas from my experience and combined them with tips and tricks from experts around the quilting world, and created a new Step-by-Step Guide for making a Turkey in the Straw paper pieced fabric postcard!
Although this is a brand new Guide, users of my other Step-by-Step Quilting Guides have sent me these comments:

"I am totally pleased with my copy of the "How To Quilt" a beginner's guide to quilting. I have used it several times in making different projects. I love the easy step directions.
We go to Tucson for the winter and stay at an RV park where they have lots of quilting classes and teachers. Everyone that has seen my book remarks on how well written it is. I have several projects going and use this book with each one. I have completed a throw for my 8 year old granddaughter that turned out beautifully and am starting a throw for my 12 year old granddaughter. Thanks for your book and the easy to follow directions!" Happy Quilting! Paula Wilson, Canyon, Texas |
"I thought your book, A Beginners Guide to Quilting was the easiest to follow, of any beginner books I read. It has helped me quite a bit, since I have never made a quilt before. The way it was put together, makes everything easy to understand, and pretty much most questions were answered, that a beginner would ask. I really look forward to your emails, with free hints." Joyce M. |
"I just wanted to tell you what a joy Nine Easy Steps to Making Your First Quilt was. I have quilted before, but had always done things the old fashioned way(a paper template, scissors and hand made saw horse frames). I had never used a rotary cutter, until I purchased your book. The chapter on stitching HSTs is definitely a time saver. I have finished two quilt tops in less than a week, and couldnt be happier. The first one I made for my granddaughter from a pattern I found on the web called "Scrappy Hearts" from the Delaware Quilts website. The second is "Sweet Baby" from Claudia's Quilt Shoppe website. I modified the basic designs to suit my needs. You will find the pics attached. The funny thing is I bought your book for my daughter. To help her get into quilting. Looks like I am going to have to order another book for her now, because this one is mine. Thanks for teaching this "old" quilter some new tricks. " Sincerely, Paula M.

"I loved your "Beginner's Guide To Quilting" book and found it very, very helpful. I read the book, cover-to-cover and it gave me the confidence I needed to attempt my very 1st quilt. I have it setting right next to my sewing machine so I can refer to it often." Brenda Coburn, Las Vegas Nevada |
"I learned a lot of helpful details from the book. It's all the little details like how to use a walking foot with machine quilting, techniques with hand quilting, how to cut and measure the fabric properly, and what kinds of borders can be applied and how to make them, that makes quilts unique and look professional. I was able to finish a beautiful quilt as well as design quilts for each of my five sisters. I knew nothing about quilting before and now I have a great hobby and I get some beautiful quilts too." I promise you, your situation is not unique. Every day I get frustrated quilters writing in asking how to do some step relating to paper piecing, or telling me that they got so frustrated, they just gave up.
With the announcement of the Turkey for the Troops Fabric Postcard project, a quilter wrote in and said that she wouldn't be able to participate because she didn't know how to paper piece, and didn't think she would be able to learn.
Wouldn't you agree that it's crazy to think you'll get different results if you keep doing the same thing over and over again? If I keep touching a hot stove and kept getting burned - I'd be silly to think that the next time I touch that hot stove I won't get burned.
