Finally, Answers to Your Questions About Thread....Even the Questions You Didn't Know You Had!

superior threads

In our recent Eavesdrop on a Telephone Conversation, President of Superior Threads, Bob Purcell, answered every question our Enquiring Quilting Minds wanted to know.

Bob had some shocking information - especially about polyester thread. Prior to hearing Bob, whenI saw polyester thread, I broke into a sweat and ran quickly away. After listening to him and hearing that many professional quilters use polyester thread, and have even won quilt shows with quilts that have polyester thread, I'll have to admit that my thoughts have changed.

And that's just one tiny piece of the information Bob shared with us. Below is just a sampling. There's tons of great thread information jam-packed into this call:

  • how to tell the weight of a thread.
  • Listen to a clip of his exact answer:
    audio clip bob purcell
  • an explanation of how to decide what kind of thread to use for a specific project (different threads have a different look, so you get to decide how you want your finished project to look, then pick your thread)
  • myth or truth - thread dries out and should be kept in a freezer (myth - actually freezers dry out thread)
  • how and why to use pre-wound bobbins (pre-wound bobbins have more thread on them, and they are easy to use)
  • definitions - things like mercerized, gassed, glazed, and silk finish, and how they affect the type of thread we use (all thread is mercerized - it's the process that allows thread to accept dye and become a beautiful color)
  • what is the difference between Long Staple and Extra Long Staple, and how does it affect our quilting (high quality thread is extra long staple)
  • can Superior's threads be used for general sewing as well as quilts and embroidery projects (yup - they can be used for all your sewing needs)
  • mixing threads in your machine - i.e., can you use 100% cotton on the top and polyester in the bobbin (mix them as you need to for your project. And Bob tells what adjustments may need to be made on your machine when you do.)

If you are at all interested in machine quilting, whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced, the Eavesdrop Conversation with expert Machine Quilter, Pam Bauer has some great tips.

She shared her secrets about things like:

  • How to set the top and bottom tensions on your sewing machine – you will know exactly how to prevent thread loops on both the top and bottom of your quilt, so folks will think you are a machine quilting expert (click here to listen to Pam's explanation, I couldn’t possibly do it justice here)

  • How to handle the bulk of your quilt – roll it up, bunch it up, or accordion fold it – to make it easier for you and result in beautiful stitches (she scrunches)

  • How fast to move your hands and fabric so your stitches are even and machine quilting the quilt doesn’t take a year and five days (Pam says that the quilt should move as fast as the needle moves)

  • Where to start quilting – side, center or corner – and should you work your way across the quilt or can you pick and choose where you want to sew, and still have no puckers or tucks on your quilt (for beginners, Pam says to start on a side and work your way around the quilt and through the middle.  That way, by the time you get to the middle you have some experience and are warmed up, and the bulk of the quilt is not such a challenge.)

  • Practice squares – are they just for the trash, or will keeping them make my machine quilting more perfect (practice squares help get the tension on your machine right, get you warmed up with your quilting design, and you can save them for future design ideas)

  • …..and many, many more tips
