Dear Friend,

If you’re like me, at times the only way something really “clicks” is when you actually see it done with your own eyes.

Think about one of the simplest tasks of all – tying your shoes . . .

Of course, tying your shoes is second nature to you now . . . BUT at first someone had to show you how to do it a few times.  Maybe even more than a few times.  They had to actually take the time to demonstrate exactly how to make the loop (or how to make two loops, like I do), how to cross them over, how to pull the knot tight, etc.

Have you ever tried to explain how to tie your shoes to someone without actually showing them?  It’s downright impossible (and super frustrating for both of you!)

Surprisingly enough, each and every step of making a quilt can be as easy as tying your shoe if you have someone who’s been there and actually done it successfully take you through the entire step-by-step process right in front of your eyes.

You Had no Choice . . . in the Past

If you’ve been afraid to start, afraid to take on a more challenging project, gotten frustrated at some point along the way, or have given up learning how to make a quilt completely . . . don’t blame yourself. I've read the books, seen the patterns, and have experienced the frustration of incomplete directions, wrong methods, and instructions that are so confusing, I don't know which way is up, let alone which is the right side of the fabric.

You probably just need a few key skills.  Have you ever said to yourself, “If someone would just show me how to do all of this once or twice, then I could do it for myself?”

Imagine how much faster of a jumpstart you could get by actually watching someone else do something first, then simply copying exactly what they do.

Makes sense, right?

It’s tough learning new information out of a book.  Statistics prove that only a tiny percentage of people naturally learn this way.  The rest of us need to be SHOWN what to do, and - - most importantly - - HOW to do it!

But the bad news is that you didn’t really have a choice . . . until now.

Most quilt books have chapters describing individual steps or processes.   One chapter shows you how to sew triangles.  Another chapter shows you how to make binding and sew it on.  Yet another chapter describes how to add sashing to your quilt.  All of that is great information, if you know what process you need, when you need it, and how it applies in the quilt you are making.

Years ago, right on this website, people interested in learning how to make a quilt discovered A Beginner’s Guide to Quilting – the first step-by-step guide to making a quilt.  Illustrated with full color photographs and detailed descriptions of every single step in making a quilt, beginning and intermediate quilters alike realized immediately that this was exactly what they needed to show them the way.

A Beginner’s Guide to Quilting has taught thousands of quilters how to make a quilt, and has helped intermediate quilters sharpen their quiltmaking skills.  A Beginner’s Guide to Quilting shows you how to cut fabric, sew your blocks together, add borders, machine quilt, and add binding to finish your quilt.  It's all about one simple, nine patch quilt.

From start to finish, you can follow along with the book and make the exact quilt using no extra resources, scouring through other quilting books, searching on the web or making hysterical phone calls to other, more experienced quilters for help.

Beginner quilters are raving about A Beginner's Guide to Quilting, another quilting resource from www.How-to-Quilt.com:

It was so easy!  The pictures were especially helpful! Friend's and family who have seen the quilt, even in stages, have complimented it.

Angie Perryman, Huntington Beach, CA

The Beginner's Guide resolved the issues with those seemingly difficult mitered corners. After receiving the guide and following the instructions carefully mitered corners are no longer a challenge.

I have both A Beginner's Guide to Quilting and How to Bind by Penny at how-to-quilt.com and i am finding them both very useful. I had the How to Bind first and used it on my very first quilt and it made binding the quilt so easy. The instructions are very clear and easy to understand. I got the binding on and looking great the first try. I am in the middle of making a quilt for my husband in his football teams' colours.

I am using Penny's A Beginner's Guide to Quilting to help me with piecing of the quilt and i am finding it a very handy reference tool with hints on putting together the blocks. As this is only my second quilt i need all the help i can get and i am finding it in "A Beginner's Guide to Quilting". I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Dear Penny,
I just wanted to tell you what a joy Nine Easy Steps to Making Your First Quilt was. I have quilted before, but had always done things the old fashioned way (a paper template, scissors and hand made saw horse frames). I had never used a rotary cutter, until I purchased your book. The chapter on stitching HSTs is definitely a time saver. I have finished two quilt tops in less than a week, and couldnt be happier.

The first one I made for my granddaughter from a pattern I found on the web called "Scrappy Hearts" from the Delaware Quilts website. The second is "Sweet Baby" from Claudia's Quilt Shoppe website. I modified the basic designs to suit my needs. You will find the pics attached.

The funny thing is I bought your book for my daughter. To help her get into quilting. Looks like I am going to have to order another book for her now, because this one is mine. Thanks for teaching this "old" quilter some new tricks.

Sincerely,
Paula M.

I loved your "Beginner's Guide To Quilting" book and found it very, very helpful.  I read the book, cover-to-cover and it gave me the confidence I needed to attempt my very 1st quilt.  I have it setting right next to my sewing machine so I can refer to it often.

Using the very easy 'laymans' terms and excellent pictures from your book, I made a quilt using local print and dyed fabric (French Polynesian) for my friend's newborn. Taking your advice, I then embroidered a who to, why and who from including the date, I also included weight and time of birth.

Caitlin was delighted and says it was the best baby gift she received. She has now left New Caledonia and gone to La Reunion. The quilt I made will be in her family and that of her son's, hopefully for many years.

It will also remind her son and his family of where he was born with a touch of  'je ne sais quoi'.

Thanks for getting my efforts organised

Beginning quilters have made beautiful quilts using this practical, no-nonsense guide.  Intermediate quilters have refined their quilting skills using the Guide, and have learned new techniques that make their quilt making easier and quicker.

But that wasn’t enough. Sewing strips and squares together can be learned easily by following A Beginner's Guide to Quilting with its full color photographs and complete descriptions. But now you are ready to take on a little more challenging project - one with different size triangles, maybe some rectangles, and even sashing between the blocks.

With those added complexities, wouldn't it help to watch someone while they sew those patches together?

Demonstrating exactly how to line up the patches to get perfect triangle points and square corners? And sharing tips and shortcuts as the fabric is sewn together, not trying to remember them after the fact.

Scores of you said DVDs would be the perfect solution. I got the message, and spent hours designing the quilt block, and then filming and painstakingly editing this video. I had always thought that designing a quilt block would be the most difficult part of making a quilting product for you.

Boy, was I wrong!

Once I had the video camera, I needed to figure out how to record with just me. After all, what camera-guy (or gal) would like to hang around for all of the hours it takes to make a quilt - even though this one is a small wall hanging?

Fortunately, my dad had two different sizes of tripods that (luckily) the videocamera fit. With those, I was able to position the camera exactly where it needed to be in order to give you the best angle to watch this quilt being sewn.

After filming more than 40 hours of quilting instruction - with takes and re-takes - I was ready to edit. Three weeks of looking at each frame and deciding what to cut out and how to paste it all together and it was ready to convert into a video that could be played on either your computer or your TV.

This video shows you exactly what you need to do to make this wall hanging or quilt, step-by-step, and sets the stage for your to make all of your future quilts with confidence and ease.

The Robin’s Nest DVD Quilting Mentor

I could have gone to my big book of quilt blocks and picked some existing quilt block for this project. But, you deserve something special for your DVD quiltmaking experience!  So, with the help of a beautiful little robin, I created a brand new, not-in-a-quilt-block-book pattern.

You see, a robin showed up outside my office window last spring and began to build a nest.  Her first nest-building material was a Kleenex.  Knowing that she wasn’t going to use the Kleenex to blow her nose, I was curious to see exactly what she would do with it.

robin in a nest
This robin sitting in a nest was the
inspiration for the Robin's Nest Quilt Block.

She stuffed the Kleenex down into the crown of the fern, and flew away.  Minutes later, she returned with a beak full of twigs.  After one or two additional trips, her plan became obvious, and within days, she had a perfect little nest.

The Kleenex had been completely covered with twigs and mud.  In fact, I thought she had discarded it, but then I saw a tiny Kleenex corner showing around the back side of the fern.

Once complete, she began sitting on the nest.  Day after day.  Now I can see why the Lazy Bird begged Horton, the elephant, to sit on her nest.  (If you haven’t read Horton Hatches an Egg, it’s worth a good laugh.)

When this dedicated mom was sitting in the nest, all that could be seen was her head, tail, and the nest, fairly well camouflaged in the crown of the tree fern.  One day I looked out at this scene, and a quilt block design was born.

robins nest quilt block
Robin's Nest Quilt Block

With nine patches on my mind, I saw squares and triangles.  As I sat at my desk, I drew out the nine patch and colored it in.  When I got home that evening, I scoured my quilt block books to see if that design already was listed and had a name.  Much to my surprise, it was nowhere to be found!

Then I decided this would be the perfect project for this DVD quilting mentor - still a nine patch with its own interesting challenges.

quilting resourceThis complete step-by-step quilting video has been a hot item from the day it was introduced. As a matter of fact, they fly off the shelves as soon as they fly in (pardon the pun!) Because of that, it would be really easy to just keep re-stocking the same item again and again.

But, we are always looking for ways to make your quilting easier by giving you exactly the information you need.

So, the last time we ran out, we decided to take a look at how we could include even more quality instruction to make your next quilting step even easier.

Beause this block includes half-square triangles as well as quarter-square triangles and Flying Geese, it seemed natural to include reports that give you other options for sewing those patches together. For years I thought there was only one way to sew triangles together.

Then, one day, I ran across a new and different way, and before I knew it, I had learned 5 different ways to sew half-square triangles together and 3 ways to sew Flying Geese. You get them all - no research required. And you can choose the one that is right for your project.

In addition, choosing colors and fabrics for quilting projects seems to be a common problem for all quilters. The Eavesdrop on a Telephone Conversation with quilters Alex Anderson and Annie Smith give in-depth information about fabric and colors for serious quilters. Plus Alex discusses hand quilting techniques that can make your hand quilting easier and more fun.

And we have now included patterns and fabric requirements for different size quilts. After all, you may want to make a twin quilt for your grandson or daughter, or a queen size quilt for your guest room. With these patterns, you won't be guessing how many blocks to make or how much fabric to buy.

Jam-packed, 4 DVDs, 7 3/4 hours of great quilting instruction, demonstration and guidance.  This goes way beyond ebooks, beyond quilt forums, workshops . . . or anything else before it.

And, again, because you asked for it, these amazing DVDs come with a step-by-step Guidebook, written in the same informative, step-by-step style as A Beginner’s Guide to Quilting – including more than 224 full color photographs loaded onto 128 pages of easy-to-understand quilting instructions.

Watch the DVDs right on your TV or computer and follow along in the written Guidebook as a quilter of more than 27 years personally walks you through the exact steps used to make this, easy-to-make 9 patch wall hanging (or quilt, if you prefer) from start to finish.

This is the closest thing to having me sitting right there next to you in your sewing room.

The Robin’s Nest DVD Quilting Mentor is NOT a downloadable product.  It comes as a 4-disc DVD and 2-disc CD tutorial delivered right to your front door.

Just pop the DVD into your TV or computer and away you go.  But first, open the Guidebook on your computer and print out the pages you need.  Then sit back, relax and watch as right before your eyes, every step of making this fun Robin’s Nest wall hanging is brought to life.

Then listen to the CD Interviews of Alex Anderson and Annie Smith to get ideas for choosing your fabric and hand quilting your quilt or wall hanging. Soon, you'll be on your way to making a brand new quilt with all of your questions answered before you even ask them.

In less than 2 weeks, quilter Sharon made this wall hanging, using the instructions in the The Robin’s Nest DVD Quilting Mentor:

Penny's Robin's Nest DVD's finally put everything together for me - YAY!!! Before that, my mother in law tried to teach me :)

Many thanks, Carol in Austin, Texas

After watching the DVDs I was eager and still am to start on a quilt by myself. I am new to quilting and have only may three with the help of the teacher working with me. The classes go rather faster and sometimes I am left with unanswered questions.

With the way the DVDs are done, I am taken through the whole process as if someone is standing beside me showing me exactly what to do and answer my questions before I even ask. Creating these disc was a wonderful idea especially for a person as myself and others new to the quilter world. It will also continue to be of value to me as my experience increase for review. Thank You for your help. I now have a renewed spirit for quilting.

Patricia Little, Wilmington, North Carolina

Received my dvd the other day, I have seen the first 2 . I think the info is great and can not wait to start. Thank you for offering this to us. I am just starting to get back into quilting and need all the help I can get, because so much has changed in the past 20 years. Thank you again, God Bless.

What I liked best about the DVD mentor is that you could WATCH Penny (over, and over, and over, sometimes..) and refer to the manual as needed. It has proven to be a great resource for me.

Liz Pilon, Cheboygan, Michigan

I thought that the Robins nest DVDs are a great help to someone like myself who has never quilted before. I especially like the way you describe everything in such detail, and all the close ups are just wonderful, I watched all the DVD's and thought that I can do this, well not quite, but I have made a small cot size for my best friend Tiny (dog) and it came out quit well with only one mistake.

Penny you have done a wonderful job on the DVD's and I would highly recommend for any would be quilter to have a look at the DVD's first. I have learnt a lot from them, without them I would not of started Quilting.

Thank you so much for all you input, and keep up your good work.

Kindest regards, Inge K., NSW, Australia

Penny,
I learned a lot of helpful details from the book. It's all the little details like how to use a walking foot with machine quilting, techniques with hand quilting, how to cut and measure the fabric properly, and what kinds of borders can be applied and how to make them, that makes quilts unique and look professional.  I was able to finish a beautiful quilt as well as design quilts for each of my five sisters.

I knew nothing about quilting before and now I have a great hobby and I get some beautiful quilts too.

Thanks,
Jennifer

This breakthrough quilting resource contains 7 3/4 hours of video with detailed instructions and demonstrations of each one of the 9 critical steps in making the Robin’s Nest Wall Hanging (or quilt).  From start to finish . . . cutting your fabric - -  binding your quilt - - my secret hanging sleeve - - and everything in between.  Nothing is held back

The Guidebook contains 128 pages and 224 full color photographs with clear instructions, and can be used with or without the DVDs.

Want to take a peek at what's inside the DVD?

how to miter a corner of your quilt
Take a Peek at a Short Clip from the DVD.
This clip shows you how to miter the corner of your binding.

View a short clip from the actual DVD by clicking on either the image or the link to the right. (This video clip is hosted by YouTube and the quality is limited by your Internet connection.)

This clip is taken from Lesson 8, where you learn exactly how to sew the binding onto your quilt. In this short video clip that you can preview for free, you will see a well-known quilter's shortcut method for mitering a corner on binding perfectly every time.

This technique is simple to learn, once you see it, but try to understand a quilter who is trying to explain it without pictures, and it's easy to get lost.

During my more than 27 years of quilting experience, I have made almost every kind of patchwork quilt imaginable.  Beginning with a simple nine patch, and progressing through Ocean Waves (using hundreds of triangles), Broken Star (with hundreds of diamonds), 3 dimensional (with set-in seams), and curves.  I’ve done lots and I’ve learned lots.

I’ve taken classes and workshops from famous quilters like Michael James, Katie Pasquini Masopust, Nancy Crow, Mary Lou Wiedman, Sharyn Craig, Arlene Stamper and more.  Even attended a weekend retreat or two.

I’ve bought books and patterns, which now consume 5 bookcases in 4 different rooms in my house.  Experimented with new quilting techniques.  Played around with dying fabric.  Challenged myself with set-in seams and trapunto.  Displayed my quilts in the San Diego Quilt Show.  And entered contests.

My background in finance has given me a kind of head start in understanding the math of making a quilt and organizing the processes into a common sense, straight forward series that takes you from start to finish, eliminating confusion and unnecessary information.

I have spent years studying, discovering the best techniques and shortcuts for making quilts, and now I am sharing them with you in video.  I have taken all of the best techniques, thrown in alternative methods, and given them to you in an easy-to-follow format to help you learn to quilt or improve your quilting skills.

Question: If you could have me come into your home and Coach you right in your sewing room, on your sewing machine - - would you?

Of course you would! Especially if you didn't have to feed me or give me a place to sleep.

Well, that’s exactly what you get with this unique video quiltmaking guide.  Just pop any one of the four DVD volumes into your TV or computer, turn up the speakers and watch, listen and learn while I personally guide you over the “tough spots” with my step-by-step, informative and experienced instructions.  Suddenly you’ll find all the mystery and confusion surrounding making a quilt with triangles melt away like snowflakes in the sun.

Each DVD comes with a menu so you can jump right to the part you need.  And the label on the DVD shows exactly what is on each disc, so you don’t need to put each disc in and search to find what you want.  I have made this so easy that you won’t even need your 7 year old to help with the technology!

Want to take notes?  If you’re anything like I am, you like to jot down new ideas, highlight things to remember, and dog-ear special pages to revisit.  You can do all of that with the Guidebook that comes along with the DVDs.  Because the Guidebook is on a CD, you can print out the whole book or just the pages you need.

And when the pages get worn out or too marked up, just print out replacement copies – at your convenience.  No going to the copy shop and paying exorbitant prices for color copies so you can still have the benefit of the full color photographs jam-packed in the manual.

What’s the cost to put Me on Your Quilting Team?

By now you may be wondering about your investment in this valuable resource.

Well, put it this way.

If you hired me to consult with you to cover all of the points on these DVDs and CDs, it would run in the neighborhood of 17-20 hours.  And at a rate of $40 per hour, that would set you back about $800 – and that doesn’t count travel or telephone expenses.  Plus at the end of that time, your head would be spinning, your notes would be flying, and you still wouldn't know exactly where to begin.

Or you could spend $40-$50 for some more quilting books, plus $20-$30 each for some books with quilting tips and then try to figure it all out yourself.

Remember, though, it’s taken me 27 years of making all different kinds of quilts, plus an investment of hundreds, maybe thousands, of dollars to sort through all of the clutter of information and give you only the best.  And I know you want to get to the heart of making beautiful family heirloom quilts and bypass all of that torture and unnecessary expense.

You could copy the picture of the block, draft it yourself using your ruler, pencil and eraser.  Oh, and remember to add seam allowances when you make your templates.

Then take your calculator and figure out how much of each fabric you need for the size quilt you want to make, go out and buy the fabric, come home and figure out for yourself each and every step along the way – scouring the books to see what might come next, reading through the seven different ways to do the same thing, picking one, making a mistake, and then either re-doing it or giving up!

By now you may have spent hours trying to figure this all out yourself and you still don’t have a finished quilt.

Maybe you have already made a bunch of quilts and think you have seen it all already.  Maybe, but if you are anything like I am, every time I pick up a quilting book or magazine, I learn something new from just one little article or picture.  Just imagine what you could learn from 128 pages of step-by-step quilting and 7 3/4 hours of live quilting on DVD.

Every quilter has unique shortcuts and techniques that she has developed over time. The big difference is that I am happy to share mine! (Not all quilters are.)

Isn’t your time worth something?

This 4 DVD set covers practically the same thing you would get in a personal consultation for a mere fraction of the investment.

And, you can look back at each and every step of making this quilt whenever you want to and how ever many times you need to – without feeling stupid or embarrassed for reviewing it eleven times. (You can even watch in your jammies or sweats or while the kids or grandkids [or hubbie] are taking a nap!)
