Dear Friend,

The idea of making a quilt for quilting daughter, Stephanie's Sunday School teacher was mine.

But, it wasn't my idea at all to make a quilt that had all of those curves in it!

heart quilt with curves
My first experience with curves in quilts

After all, I had been quilting for only a few years, and was still trying to master sewing straight seams with perfect quarter inch seam allowances.

And by straight seams, that is exactly what I mean - straight seams, like square patches, sprinkled with a few triangles (well, at least I was sewing something straight - not curved!).

In my early quilting days, I didn't know about designing quilts using traditional quilt blocks, so we would go to the fabric or quilt shop and search for a pattern to copy.

That was the plan for this quilt, too.

With 2 year old engineer son, Bubba, in tow, Stephanie and I headed off to the store in search of the perfect quilt for her Sunday School teacher.

It didn't take her long to find one.

And, really, what's not perfect about hearts in a quilt? Especially when you are about 4 years old and don't have to sew it together?

I had made a few heart baby quilts before she chose the pattern. But each heart was machine appliqued onto a small square of fabric. It had taken scores of them for me to get to the point where they were reasonably presentable, let alone beautiful.

And, they were zigzagged - you remember those, don't you? Big, bulky stitching around the outside of a piece of fabric, and you hope that the fabric doesn't bunch up and get all puckery.

But compared to sewing a curved seam, the curved zigzag seemed simple.

So, when I looked at all of the curves in this quilt, my first reaction was to tell her that it would be too hard for me to sew.

Not wanting to admit that and possibly disappoint her, I suggested other quilts that might be just as nice.

But she was not to be swayed.

So, we got the heart pattern with all the curves, and the fabric, and headed home.

Fortunately I had plenty of time before the quilt needed to be finished, because it took weeks for me to get the courage to even start cutting fabric, let alone sewing anything. All the while, Stephanie kept wanting to see the progress on the quilt.

Oh, I opened the pattern and scoured the instructions, hoping to find some tips about sewing all of those curves.

Of course, there were none to be found - I guess the designer thought every quilter "just knew" how to sew beautiful curves.

Not me! And I'm sure I wasn't alone.

A few weeks after we got the pattern, I happened to be glancing through the books at our local quilt shop, and came across one by Pepper Cory about sewing Drunkard's Path quilts.

I had always been intrigued by those quilts, so I picked up the book.

When I looked through it, I discovered that now I had the key to sewing perfect curves - right there in front of me!

And it wasn't even that hard!

fish quilt using clamshells

Every seam in the center of this
quilt is a curve - and easy to sew when you know the secret

It's just like so many other techniques in quilting, once you get a few tips, you are on your way to creating beautiful quilts.

And now that I had that one bit of missing information, I was ready to sew each and every one of the curves in that quilt.

The heart quilt went together so quickly and easily, I was amazed.

Plus I wasn't afraid of sewing curves, and when I took a workshop on sewing quilts with clamshells years later, I didn't think twice, even though I knew that every seam in the center of the quilt would be a curve!

And when other quilters in the workshop were struggling with their seams, I was able to help them get the same perfect and beautiful curves I get.

And Now You Can Have Perfect Curves
in Your Quilts, Too!

Why limit yourself to sewing only straight seams when you can get the information you need to sew perfect curves that will amaze your family and friends?

There's a reason that you don't see as many quilts with curves as quilts with squares and triangles.

And it's not because there are only a limited number of quilt blocks with curves, or quilts with curves in them.

It's because most quilters are afraid to sew curves.

Now you don't need to be one of them.

With Secrets for Sewing Perfect Curves in Quilts, you have all of the information you need to sew perfect curves every time - whether you are sewing quarter-square curves like the ones in the familiar Drunkard's Path quilt blocks and their variations, or clamshell-type quilts, like the fish quilt above.

That's because sewing curves doesn't take years of practice, it takes just a few key tips and techniques. Tips that many quilters either forget to share - or just plain don't want you to know!

But, we are different here at www.How-to-Quilt.com. We want you to have the information you need to make your quilting easier and more fun.

So, we are excited about sharing the knowledge it will take to make you successful in your quilt making, and sewing quilts with curves is no exception.

In this DVD Mentor, you will see:

  • how to mark and cut your curved patches when you don't have an acrylic plastic template to guide you - just like square and triangle patches, if you cut your fabric the wrong size, the pieces won't fit together, and your sewing experience could be frustrating at best; wasteful, if you decide it can't be fixed and you throw the whole thing in the trash
  • how to make templates the size you want - not the size they want to give you - I thought it would be easy to find some nice acrylic templates when I wanted to make 12 inch square blocks with a quarter square curve. Not so, there were 7 inch templates and 4 inch templates. The 4 inch templates made sense to me - but 7 inches; who does that!?
  • techniques that will make sewing your curved pieces together much easier and more accurate - you'll zip right through these patches and blocks once you see these few easy-to-learn techniques
  • how to measure and add blocks as borders - sometimes you'll want to add blocks as border strips, but the measurement gets a little complicated. Now you'll have a technique for adding the blocks AND a narrow strip between the center of the quilt and the border, without any problem at all.
  • big stitch quilting
Finish your quilt in no time at all using Big Stitch quilting
  • how to layer and baste your quilt for hand quilting, Big Stitch style - layering and basting are the same whether you are big stitch quilting or hand quilting in the traditional style. You'll see how to layer and baste your quilt without hurting your back.
  • easy methods for marking your quilt with a quilting design - you'll be amazed at how easy it is to mark curved quilting lines on a quilt, whether you are using Big Stitch quilting or traditional hand quilting
  • tools and techniques for successful and beautiful big stitch quilting - learn the latest techniques for finishing your quilts in less than half the time of traditional hand quilting and with the same beautiful heirloom look of hand quilting.
  • And much, much more.

Avoid the Frustration of Sewing Curves in Quilts Today

No more puckers - just

in this package

You don’t need to suffer the frustration that many quilters feel when they sew curves in their quilts!

I got lucky because I discovered a valuable resource before I actually started cutting and sewing the curved patches for my quilt.

Many quilters don't have access to those resources, and end up ruining fabric experimenting on their curve-sewing techniques.

I saw it firsthand in the clamshell workshop I took.

The thing is, that once you know a simple technique and you know that it works, often you just assume that everyone knows it, too - just like the designer of the heart quilt for Stephanie's Sunday School teacher.

But the fact is that there are thousands of quilters who don't know the easy way to sew curved pieces for their quilts. They might spend hours trying to figure it out only to get frustrated and throw the pattern and the fabric away.

But you can be different!

For more than 6 years now, www.How-to-Quilt.com has brought quilters the best how-to- quilting information on the planet!

Using easy-to-follow, over-my-shoulder video instruction, shot right in my home as I work on the quilt, you get everything you need laid out in front of you.

No guessing where to begin, which part to go to next, or what is important and what can be left out.

And this is no whimpy video, either.

This is a 6 disc set that includes 2 hours 47 minutes and 10 seconds of complete video instruction that holds you by the hand and walks you through construction of this beautiful quilt with curves - from start to finish.

The pattern is a classic, traidtional quilt block - Illinois Rose.

quilt with curves illinois rose quilt block
Illinois Rose Quilt with Curves

Instead of making a bunch of small blocks, the beautiful block has been enlarged and each patch is 12 inches, making the curves gentle and easy to sew.

The techniques are the same for smaller blocks, and if you want, you can make a quilt using smaller blocks.

But this demonstration quilt makes your exploration into quilts with curves much more fun and less frustrating.

In these videos, you will see how to:

how to bind a quiltCreate templates for your blocks - with these techniques, you'll be able to make any size quilt block you want, especially when you are sewing quilts with curves. Because each block (or patch) is 1/4 of a circle, the only requirement is that the curves are in the same place in each patch. But you can make your circle (or curve) take up a small portion of the patch or a large portion - you choose - and get the perfect template so your patches and blocks will fit exactly. Plus think of the money you will save by not having to buy acrylic templates that you can only use once or twice, giving you more resources for fabric!

how to bind a quiltMark your fabric so you will know where to cut and where to sew. No more doubt about where you need to sew to ensure that each piece fits together and your quarter circles will match, completing a beautiful and perfect circle. Anyone looking at your finished quilt will think you have been sewing quilts with curves for years - even though this is your first one.

how to bind a quilt Handle directional fabric and ensure that the design is facing the right way in each block in the quilt. One of the fabrics in this quilt has little fish swimming across the fabric. I could have ignored that, and just cut the pieces, having the fish swimming in all different directions. Instead, I decided to have the fish swimming across the quilt, requiring that I cut each piece of fabric in a particular way to ensure that the fish are right side up and swimming from left to right. Sound complicated? Maybe - but it really isn't, and you'll see how easy it is right there on Disc 1 of Secrets for Sewing Perfect Curves in Quilts.

how to bind a quilt Keep track of the blocks as you sew them together so the blocks are in the right position in your quilt. There is little more frustrating and disappointing than hanging up a finished quilt top only to see that one or two of the blocks are sewn in the wrong position or the wrong direction in your quilt. Prevent that from ever happening again with my easy technique for stacking and sewing blocks that ensures everything stays in the right place. You'll see this in Disc 2 of Secrets for Sewing Perfect Curves in Quilts.

how to bind a quilt Add interesting borders to your quilt. These borders look like they might be challenging because they include quarter curves, but really they are easy. Once I had the borders complete, I decided to add a narrow fabric strip between the center and the first border. You'll be amazed as you see how easy it is to add that border, even though it meant that the center of the quilt needed to be trimmed slightly. This will all unfold in Disc 3.

how to bind a quilt Because this quilt is about 72 inches square, it required a pieced backing. In Disc 4, you'll see a simple method for piecing your backing fabric that will save you both time and money.

how to bind a quiltLayer and baste your quilt quickly and easily so that the layers stay together and your finished quilt has no puckers or tucks. Whether you choose to quilt your quilt using the Big Stitch technique or a traditional hand quilting technique, your quilt will need to be basted, and there is no need to strain your back during the process. You'll see how I set up and baste my quilts quickly and easily and without back strain.

how to bind a quilt Big Stitch Quilting! This is becoming quite popular among quilters today. Although the technique has been around for years, our generation of quilters are learning to love this style of hand quilting. It's easy because the stitches are quite large (about 1/4 inch) and intended to be uneven - unlike traditional hand quilting where the goal is to get stitches that are all the same length. You will need some different quilting tools (easy to find and inexpensive, but critical to your success). You'll see how to thread a self-threading needle, the right type of needle to use for perfect stitches, and how to take each stitch. These quilting techniques work whether you are Big Stitch Quilting or quilting using traditional techniques. You'll see how to mark and quilt your quilt in Disc 5.

how to bind a quiltOf course - binding. Simple, yet effective binding will finish this beautiful quilt in no time. You'll get my secret binding technique that amazes even professional quilters when I share it with them. Once you use this binding technique, you may never use a different style again.

how to bind a quilt let's not forget - how to sew those curves! You'll get explanations and demonstrations for sewing the curves in these blocks so you will know every pitfall and how to avoid them. And how to set up your curved pieces so you never see anything but perfect curves every time!

With these techniques,
you will want to show off
your quilt with curves to your
family and friends.

- - -  and much, much more.

The Secrets for Sewing Perfect Curves in Quilts DVD Mentor is a step-by-step video showing how to make this Illinois Rose quilt - from cutting to binding.

But don't limit your thinking by assuming that you need to make this exact quilt.

The techniques you will see in these videos will work for any quilt with curves you decide to make - whether you choose to enlarge a block and make a medallion-type quilt (like this one) or make individual blocks that have several curves in each one.

Using the simple techniques in this quilting resource, you will be confident in sewing each and every curve, and you will be anxious to show your finished quilt off to your family and friends.

As a matter of fact, don't be surprised if they ask if you hired a professional to sew the blocks together.

Your biggest challenge might be making them believe that you sewed the curves!

"But How do I Know I Can Learn from You?" You Ask . . .

It's a fair question. And, frankly, I'd be asking the same one, because I want to be sure that any investment I make in my quilting instruction will be worth it.

So, what makes me different?

Years after I learned how to quilt, my daughter, Stephanie (who was 6 years old at the time), decided to take sewing classes from Barbara, a lady down the street. Barbara loved to make clothes, and wanted to share her craft with children, so about five of the neighborhood girls went to her house once a week and learned how to sew clothes.

The clothes were beautiful! And the girls had great fun. Barbara even staged fashion shows in her lovely back yard so these young ladies could show off their accomplishments to family and friends.

Then one day, Stephanie told Barbara that she wanted to learn how to make a quilt. Barbara panicked. She was an expert at making clothes, but knew nothing about how to sew a quilt. I knew that my daughter didn't want to learn how to make a quilt from me - she wanted Barbara to teach her.

So, Barbara and I hatched a plot.

During the day, when the girls were in school, I went to Barbara's house and taught her how to make a quilt. We picked an easy pattern, and with my step-by-step, easy-to-understand approach, Barbara learned how to make a quilt with skill and ease.

This is the same approach I use to teach how to sew quilts with curves.

Almost 6 years ago, I decided I wanted to teach people how to quilt and how to improve their quilting skills online.

Since that time, I have taught thousands of quilters how to make quilts from start to finish. And I have shared my shortcuts and techniques through video and written instruction - all online!

Here is what quilters have to say about my other quilting DVDs:

Penny, I am so grateful for your site and all the great information that you have provided for all of us quilters.

I have been watching the videos and they are just GREAT. You know sometimes it is the simplest things that give some of us so much grief in quilting, but with these videos and the Frequently Asked Questions site it has been a great help. Keep up the Great work that you do for all of us.

Debra in Kansas

So far I have purchased almost everyone of your quilting mentor packages and am enjoying all my expert advise and tutoring for making my own personal memories.

Thank You, Penny.  You are Amazing.  Keep up the excellent Website information for us that are challenged to do the best we can with what we have.  That means now, with your mentor DVD's at my side I have the best information that money can buy to help me along with my quilt. From the bottom of my heart I appreciate all you have done to make it possible for me to do my best work.

I just didn't get how to do Rotary Cutting but watching your video made it all clear!! I am now so glad I have the video and cd discs, and unlike a teacher in a class,  you can replay it over and over til you get it, without embarassment.

Dear Penny.

I made my first Quilt. Thanks to you it came out much better for my first one than i ever tought it would.Your CD's are very easy to follow. You did a very good Job explaining everything.

Even the back-side looks great,no pleats at all. I must say i am very proud of myself for doing such a good Job. I already started my second one. That one is a bit harder.

But i will try my best.

Christa Endres

I just wanted to tell you how easy to understand your directions are.  It has made it simple for me.  Thank you very much.  If you have any thing else please add me to your list.

Joanie Christie

Penny I can't begin to tell you how much I'm enjoying the set of DVD's to help me master the art of quilting.  I've followed your instructions to the "T" and I think I'm finally getting the whole process.

I bought another set of DVD's, when I didn't think my order went through with you, and I'm so disappointed with them.  The two ladies seems confused and are giving totally different information from what I've gleaned in watching quilting shows on TV.  They remind me of ME quilting, turning the fabric first one way and then the other and not seeming to know which end is up, literally.

I just wanted to let you know how much help you're giving to me even though you're miles away.  I love the "feel" of your video's as well, a homespun, bird in the background, what sounds like a dog slurping water, etc.  It reminds me of being in a familiar home of a good friend, not an impersonal video teacher. I think everyone who's on the fence about ordering should do so.  What I learned is well worth the price and in installments no less, what could be better.

Susan Moore, deaf - video "Robin's Nest" is WOW!!!!! quilting instruction. Quilt is beginner!!! XOXOXOXO Susan

Penny's Robin's Nest DVD's finally put everything together for me - YAY!!!  Before that, my mother in law tried to teach me :)

Your time is worth something, isn't it?

By now, you are probably beginning to wonder how much this critical information about sewing quilts with curves will be.

Well, put it this way.

You could be like my friend, Cindy, and attend hundreds of workshops. Maybe you aren’t planning to become an expert in sewing quilts with curves like Cindy; even so, if you are like most quilters, you’ll need to attend 3-4 workshops to get a good start on techniques for sewing quilts with curves.

Most workshops, if you can find one in your area specifically about creating quilts with curves and big stitch quilting, cost $40-$50. And times 3, means you’ll have about $150 plus 3 days invested in your quilting education.

Plus for each workshop, you'll be required to take supplies to make a quilt with curves, just like the one the teacher is making - no chance for you to decide how large or which design.

And, although you’ll have the notes and some practice, you’ll be back at your house and the teacher will go to her house, giving you no further access to her information.

With Secrets for Sewing Perfect Curves in Quilts, you will have this information at your fingertips any time of the day or night you want it. No attendance at a class required. No hauling your machine or quilting supplies. No extra investment of time or materials.

Plus, who ever gets to the part where you finish your quilt during a workshop? I know I never have.

That means that rarely do you get information about how to make a backing for your quilt that is the right size when you have to piece it.

And what about layering, basting and quilting?

I don't know about you, but I have never had a teacher talk about it and demonstrate how to layer, baste and quilt a quilt.

Most of the time, the workshop ends, and you are left with discovering all of that information on your own!

Secrets for Sewing Perfect Curves in Quilts - Video and audio right in the comfort of your home – 24/7.

Or, you could get a pile of books. I have a bunch, and you could probably narrow it down to about 7. Even so, you would have to read them all and sort out the “fluff” to get to the real information. It doesn't take long to realize that you have invested more than $175 in books.

Plus, you have to count on understanding the information the way it is written in the book. What if you don’t get it and the pictures don’t really show what is happening either?

And how do you know they are sharing everything? Often quilters didn't even return calls when you ask for their help. And some quilters just want to keep all that knowledge to themselves - kind of like the secret family recipe. So they give you part of the information, but not everything you need.

Frankly, I never did understand that.

With these videos, you get to watch the tip or technique while it is explained to you. Don’t understand? Just replay it. Right then or days or months later when you need the specific information. As many times as you like, with nobody peering over your shoulder asking you why you didn't understand the first time!

Every quilter has unique shortcuts and techniques that she has developed over time. The big difference is that I am happy to share mine! And because I am sewing exactly the way I sew when the camera is off, you get every inside tip and technique I have - including the mistakes and failed experiments with the corrections and suggestions for improvement.

Even though this video package includes complete instructions for creating a beautiful quilts with curves and Big Stitch hand quilting, we always like to include special goodies for our quilting friends. After all, you deserve the best!
