Greetings Quilter,
Star quilts and Mariner's Compass quilts have always been quite popular among quilters - for their beauty, not necessarily because they are easy to make.

| My Mariner's Compass quilt |
Patterns for traditional star quilts are relatively easy to find.
There is the traditional Ohio Star, and 8 pointed Idaho Star quilt block, a Martha Washington Star quilt block which has a little pinwheel in the center, and the more complex Harlequin Star quilt block.
(You can see pictures of these below.)
Mariner's Compass patterns are also relatively easy to find, yet difficult to make.
But the patterns that are available for traditional quilt blocks are all simple blocks that make traditional quilts.
Don't get me wrong, I love traditional quilts. But every once in a while, it's nice to create a quilt that is just a little different. One that has a little spark, and people take notice of.
The best I could do with my Mariner's Compass quilt was to use some bright colors set in a black backgroud. Simple. Done. But still not a quilt or wall hanging that someone would look at and remember.
But where do you get these ideas?
Although I wish I could create them, I still rely on pictures of quilts that other quilters have made for ideas for my quilts.
And it's even better when I can get the instructions for making them, too.
Quilt books are a fabulous resource for getting ideas. But usually quilt books are about one type of quilt - for example, log cabin quilts, crazy quilts, and holiday quilts.
Or maybe the book is a collection of quilts by one quilter, focusing on a theme - i.e., Alex Anderson's Baby Quilts with Love.

| The quilts in this beautiful resource are all about points, peaks and spikes - including stars and Mariner's compass quilts and wall hangings. |
Every once in a while, quilters get lucky and a book publisher decides to put together a book with quilts designed by several popular quilters.
As you can imagine, the benefit is that we get the best of the best.
Because it is a book publisher, they know who are the most popular quilters, and which are the most popular books and quilt designs.
And this month is one of those months!
Our friends at C&T Publishing have come out with a beautiful collection of Quilter's Favorite quilts - chosen because they are popular quilts designed by popular quilters.
And, yes there is a theme. But this theme is so broad that the collection of quilts will amaze every quilter who peeks inside.
Quilter's Favorites includes instructions for 19 spectacular, yet easy, quilts from our favorite authors, including Alex Anderson, Piece O'Cake Designs, Jean Wells and Carol Doak.
And each one of the quilts features points, peaks or spikes.
How fun is that?
Just think, you'll get stars (big ones and little ones), Mariner's Compass quilts, basket quilts and pyramid quilts.
You can see the fun star on the cover, looking like an Ohio Star with uneven points - done using plaid fabric!
Check out the Mariner's Compasses - layered - and the pyramids using fabric to make them look 3 dimensional.
And that's just the beginning.
There are other quilt designs that are more traditional and rely on placement of the fabric to create the spark in the quilt.
And you get the tips and techniques you need to choose the perfect fabric and put it in the right place to make your quilt stand out from the crowd.
I can't wait to get my hands on this!
This Resource Will Start Your Quilting Year Off Right
Now that the holidays are behind us, it's time to enjoy getting back to some serious - yet fun - quilt making.
And this could be the resource to give you the inspiration and instructions you need.
Whether you are using new fabric or fabric from your stash, there are ideas between the covers of this resource that will trigger memories of traditional quilts and fun times from the past as well as ensure that your next quilt is made to perfection and will become a family heirloom for generations to enjoy - a kind of melding the past traditions of quilting with future generations in your family!
