When General Motors lays off 130,000 employees, large chains like Circuit City, Starbucks, and Zales close hundreds of stores, and even WalMart lays off more than 1,450 employees, many surviving local quilt shop owners are probably wondering what they can do to survive – let alone thrive.
Today, more than ever, quilt shop owners like you are anxious to figure out how to get the share of the quilting business revenue you deserve.
Who’s Buying Quilting Supplies?
Many of us know that the number of quilters in the United States has been growing for the past several years, and with the impending retirement of the Baby Boomers, you can expect that trend to continue.
After all, for many, retirement brings the desire to remain active and interested in new trends, combined with the need for an activity that might not be so physically challenging.
Many Baby Boomers have fond memories of their grandmothers or mothers gathering with friends, neighbors or church groups to create beautiful quilts for babies, weddings, hope chests, and adorn beds at home.
And now given more time, the thought of learning how to quilt or creating more quilts for their family and friends is irresistible.
On the other end of the age spectrum are the young mothers in our midst.
Many of them are getting back to basics as well as searching for activities that are relaxing (de-stressing) and might even involve their children when they are old enough.
And all of that is just in the US.
But, the growth of quilting is not limited to the US.
With people and information traveling so readily, quilting is growing throughout the entire world. And all of these quilters are connected by the internet.
The truth is that even in this economy, people are still spending money – especially on things that they really want or want to do.
Oh, it’s easy to buy into the notion that people are spending money only on things they need – and nothing beyond that.
Yet we all know that’s not really true.
There is still a long line every morning at the 5 Starbucks’ that are in my little berg of La Mesa, California – population about 40,000.
Yet, I can buy a whole 3 pound can of coffee for the price of one cup of Starbucks!
And since there are plenty of people who don’t drink coffee, we know it’s not a requirement for life – although I’ll readily admit that it is a necessity in my house!
Have you been to a mall lately?
I’m sure business at some malls is down, but we couldn’t find a parking place at the mall last weekend when we went to see a movie. Once inside the mall, my friend said he had never seen the mall so crowded – even at Christmas. And people weren't just walking - they had bags in their hands!
And how about the iPhone?
Maybe the State of California believes that iPhones are a necessity, since they are planning to give them to all of the homeless people on the street, but, really – do all of the estimated 6.5 million people who buy iPhones every quarter rush out and spend $200-300 with the same casual thought as if they were buying groceries for next week? Likely not.
The point is, that whether the economy is good or bad, people spend money for the things they want, and you deserve to get your share of the money quilters are investing in their quilts.
Are You Getting Your Share of the Cash?
You deserve to get your share of the more than $3.3 Billion people are spending every year on quilting – you just need to let them know about your shop!
But where do you find them? You are probably doing a ton of advertising, so they should know you are there to serve all of their quilting needs!
Your shop is listed in the Yellow Pages.
You advertise in your local newspaper and maybe even quilting magazines.
You sponsor newsletters of the local quilt guilds.
You haul your quilting goodies to quilt shows – both local and around your state or the country.
You speak at local guilds and let quilters know about the great quilting resources available at your shop.
Yet, probably, your business is still not generating as much income as you would like.
And with all of these challenges, the real question is:
Are You Using All of the Online Resources Available to You – or Do You Even Know What They All Are?
You are probably so busy running your shop that you don’t have time to pay any attention to your website, because you aren’t sure it will generate any cash for you.
Possibly you hired someone to develop a beautiful website for your shop only to be disappointed because it didn’t bring in the thousands of dollars you thought it would – or worse – the website guy ran off with your money and you ended up with no website or improvements to your current site, or the improvements were so bad, you wished you had left the site alone.
I’ve not only heard those horror stories, I have experienced the same thing.
Maybe you have one of the “canned” quilting websites, and you are sending some kind of email, but you can’t see that your website is really making any difference to your business. And what you can do is limited by the operator of the site so you have very little control over what goes up on the site and what email gets sent out.
Believe me, you aren’t alone there either.
Oh, I’ve checked out many quilt shop websites and seen what’s around.
Some have nice pictures of their shop; links for workshops; the requisite phone number, address and maybe even a map showing the location of the shop.
But if it is not easy for a visitor to find or buy anything, the shop owner isn’t making money from having the site – or at least can’t measure the benefit of having the site.
The problem is that most quilt shop websites are completely static, and rely on quilters to find the online information the shop is providing, let alone find the website in the first place.
And with millions of websites with hundreds of thousands of quilting websites, what are the chances that a quilter is going to locate your shop just to see what you might have this week?
Some web surfers will. And some of your customers will. But how many?
And, if a quilter moves out of your town, do you make it easy for her to know about the new quilting goodies your shop adds each month?
Or does she become a lost customer to you and a great customer to another quilt shop owner?
I’m sure that you’ll agree that many of the customers who moved away still want to keep in touch and would love to continue to buy from you, and are willing to even pay a little extra because they consider you a trusted quilting friend.
What if you could get hundreds, or even thousands, of quilters clicking through to your website every day – and buying quilting items from you?
Sound impossible? It’s not.
It’s not only possible – but you can do it effortlessly! And it will work even while you are sleeping.
How do I know?
Because I am doing just that; and I don’t even have a quilt shop!
Everything I do related to quilting is online, and I had more than 1.2 million visits to my site last year (2009) an average of 3,513 every day.
In 2008, I had just 384,247 visits, an average of 1,052 per day.
And, yes, it translated into an increase in cash – my sales were up more than 23% - in a really bad economy!
I’m not saying that to brag, because I know I could have done better.
But in this economy as I watch quilt shops, as well as other businesses, struggle and close, an increase in sales of more than 22% seems pretty good.
And maybe you are wondering about the bottom line – that was up by 45%.
This isn’t just a fluke, and it isn’t because I’m some kind of whiz-bang quilting marketing genius who’s been in business for 20 years.
Finance is my background, marketing (and internet marketing) was brand new to me when I started my business a short 5 years ago.
And those increases - they are continuing into this year - because I am still using my Online Success System.
My Story Is One of Struggle - Maybe Just Like Yours
Maybe your business experience has been a piece of cake, but mine hasn’t.
Eleven years ago, when my ex-husband and I split up, my income was barely adequate to support one person, let alone enough to support my two kids and me.
The few hundred dollars of child support and the $131 per year (yes, per year - it isn't a typo!) in alimony helped a little, but every month was a new adventure in paying bills and juggling credit card payments and balances.
For two years, as I watched my kids grow and flourish, my debt was growing and flourishing right along with them.
Eventually I was able to get a job making more money, but it still wasn’t enough. Five years later, with increasing debt and two kids in college, I was handed a layoff notice from the County of San Diego, as a result of a budget cut. Fortunately the clock ran for a few more months.
In one way, I was relieved, since I was miserable with my boss and my job. But I didn’t have many options.
Transferring to a different department was possible, but would have resulted in a decrease in pay of 30%. The household math already wasn’t working, and with a 30% decrease in pay, I would have had to move back in with my parents. And, at 56 years old, that was not an option.
So I started looking around. First I looked at other companies, but I was sick of working at a boring job I hated just to pay the bills, and there wasn't anything very exciting out there.
Then one day, a spam email popped into my email box. It was an ad for a program teaching how to make money online.
In desperation, I decided to give it a whirl.
Within a short time, I learned how to sell on eBay. Within a few weeks, I was making a few hundred dollars a week on eBay, selling collectible matchbooks and menus - all out of my kitchen. (Amazing as that sounds!)
But, as you can imagine, finding collectible matchbooks and old menus isn’t like turning on a faucet and watching the water gush out. It became clear that to really make some money, I would need to invest thousands of dollars in someone’s matchbook or menu collection, then spend hundreds of hours sorting, taking pictures and then posting the auctions on eBay.
Doable, to be sure. But the hourly rate was less than minimum wage, I didn’t have thousands of dollars to invest in matchbooks that might not sell, and a few hundred dollars a week wasn't enough to pay my mortgage, let alone food, clothes, and college for the kids.
Then I ran into someone who talked about setting up a website to sell products in addition to selling them on eBay. That sounded like a good idea, but I didn’t know anything about setting up a website.
By then, my son was in college, and a friend of his was doing a little business in his dorm room setting up websites. Just what I needed.
And I had this great idea – selling kitchen tools and gadgets. I got the website up, invested hundreds (at least it wasn’t thousands) of dollars in inventory, and was ready to become a millionaire.
I sold some cookie sheets on eBay, but not much traffic came to the website, and that whole thing ended up making less money than selling matchbooks and menus. Eventually I shut down the website, donated the inventory to a Kiwanis Club for a project, and went back to the drawing board.
I had a few pieces to the internet puzzle, but I was still somewhat frustrated, and unwilling to give up. I began searching for yet another way to make money online.
Finally, a Profitable Discovery
Then, one Saturday I attended a workshop about setting up a website.
I hired a coach and discovered that I was missing some critical pieces to this internet puzzle. Once I put the final pieces in place, the drawing board once again came alive. And this time, the results became massively productive.
Within 6 months, I had my website up. I was selling a product and providing information to quilters around the world. And since I had been a quilter for years, it didn’t even seem like work.
Although I was ready to make a fortune, the fortune wasn't finding me. Using the strategies I learned, my business grew, but then it stalled out, and I ran out of things to try.
So, I began the search once again - investing thousands of dollars and hours trying different systems, styles of websites, marketing techniques, different businesses, and anything else under the sun that even remotely looked like it had a change of working.
I learned how to make money setting up websites that had tons of articles to make money just from Google ads. Yes, that made money - my best month was $12.56, which didn't come close to paying back the $4,995.00 plus $97 per month I invested to learn that brilliant strategy.
It's funny now, but I wasn't laughing at the time.
I signed up for a monthly report teaching about all different kinds of internet strategies - buying and selling domain names, building outrageously expensive homes and selling them online, setting up catalog sites selling drawer knobs.
Fun stuff, and I learned a lot, but it didn't exactly translate into a thriving online business. And I can't say for sure that it put the $4,206.24 that I invested in those schemes directly into my bank account.
And there were more. I don't even want to add up the tens of thousands of dollars I have invested in my online education.
When I finally got connected with a marketing company and began to understand and implement the real marketing that was necessary behind the website, I turned the corner and my business took off.
In my third year, I crossed the $200,000 gross revenue mark, and once again, thought I was on my way to millions.
Then, “The Economy” Hit.
Somehow, I thought I was going to miss the entire Economic Downturn.
For months, my sales continued to be good and newsletter subscriptions were going up.
But then, in the Fall of 2008, my sales flattened out, and actually decreased for a couple of months, and the number of new subscribers dropped like a rock, even though I was telling Google to place more ads.
Trust me I was getting a little worried. Maybe you felt the same way about then.
But, I had no options.
By then I had been out of the traditional workforce so long, I figured the only job I could get would be as a greeter at WalMart, which wouldn’t possibly pay my mortgage.
And I still wasn’t willing to move in with my aging mom and dad - much as they would have loved to have me!
I had my website, and I had to make it work.
In late September 2008, I began to look at all of the things I had learned about running businesses online.
By then, I knew about writing articles, placing ads strategically on my web pages, and sending emails to my subscribers.
At that point, I was sending an email with a monthly newsletter to my subscribers, and I noticed that whenever I did that, the traffic and sales on my site increased – for a day or two.
In a casual conversation, a marketing friend suggested that I send my newsletter four times a month instead of just once.
Even though it was a little more work, I decided to give it a try. After all, if I could get my subscribers to go to my site four times as often, maybe they would buy more when they visited.
For a couple of months, I played around with that strategy. My website traffic, indeed, increased, but I didn’t get much of an increase in revenue.
And then came January 2009.
Because January 2009 was my 50th month in business, I told my newsletter subscribers that I was going to send them a quilting tip each of the first 50 days of the year – to celebrate my 50 months in business.
I figured that if they clicked through to see my newsletter, maybe they would click on the link in an email to see the quilting tips I was providing – for free.
And I started. January 1, 2009.
Then January 2, January 3, and on and on and on.
At first almost every day I reminded them that this was a special series of tips, lasting only for 50 days.
I was worried that they would get mad at me for sending so many emails and they would decide to get themselves off my newsletter list.
I held my breath a lot, yet kept on sending the daily email with tips and techniques.
But a funny thing happened.
By the end of the first week, I was getting emails thanking me for the great information and telling me to keep them coming, and my sales increased from the previous year.
Around the middle of February, I stopped reminding them about the 50 days of tips, and just continued sending a daily email, and my sales continued to increase from the previous year.
And now more than a year later, I am still sending a daily email with helpful quilting information, and my list of newsletter subscribers is growing, my revenue is growing, and I keep getting emails telling me how much they enjoy the information and to please keep the daily emails coming!
To be sure, there are people who un-subscribe from my newsletter list each day. They were un-subscribing when I sent only one email each month. But more are added every day, and more stay on than get off.
The topics of my emails range from ideas for quilts (many of them are quilts I have made personally); information about quilting supplies like fabric, thread, and batting; how-tos about quilting techniques; and quilting tools – you know, the rulers, chalk for marking, etc. that you carry in your quilt shop.
And Then an Even More Interesting Thing Happened.
My newsletter subscribers were buying my products showing them how to make quilts, and I was happy – since that meant my revenue was increasing.
At the same time, they were sending me emails asking where they could buy some of the things I was writing articles about but didn’t sell on my site.
Not the quilts! But the tools – rulers, needle threaders, marking chalk, needles, thimbles, and things like that.
Because I don’t carry any of those things, I began referring them to my friend who owns a quilt shop locally.
Then it occurred to me that if I can generate sales for quilting products that quilt shops carry, why not share that strategy with quilt shops so they could generate sales for their own shops, while helping quilters enjoy their craft more?
Yes, I could keep this information for myself, open up a mega-quilt shop and use the strategy to grow my business.
The thing is, I really love what I do, and want to make sure that quilters all over the world can walk into their local shop and touch the fabric, check out the latest books and tools, talk to other quilters, and attend workshops.
And having a giant online quilt shop providing quilting supplies doesn’t really keep quilters inspired to make more quilts – which is what I love to do.
I want to help quilt shops increase their business, using the resources they already have.
Plus, some of my internet marketing friends started asking me questions about what I was doing. They, too, were amazed that my sales had increased by such a grand percentage in this crummy economy.
They can wait.
I want to help quilt shop owners first.
I decided to gather all of the information necessary for you, as a shop owner, to have the same success selling items from your shop.
Using this information, when you get a handy new ruler, your newsletter subscribers will know how the ruler works and why it is a useful tool for making quilts, and possibly they will drop into your shop and buy that ruler – and other things you carry.
You can teach quilters about the different types of batting, how to decide which batting to choose, and let them know they can buy it at your shop.
Or better yet, if your website is set up right, quilters can order from you online and have it delivered, allowing your staff to fill the order during some down time during their day.
How about the new workshop you are giving?
Using these strategies, you can let everyone on your newsletter subscription list know about the class, register and pay online.
You can deliver the supply list for the class using your email system, and you can even offer supplies for the class that they can purchase for pick up the day of the class, or by mail delivery.
Not only will more quilters know about the fabulous classes and workshops you offer, but you can rest assured that attendees will have the right supplies for the class or workshop.
Plus you will be doing them a big favor by allowing them to show up for the class, relaxed and ready to go knowing that they have exactly what they need.
What happens when you get new books?
If you are like most quilt shops, you add the new books to your racks. Maybe you set new books in a special place in your shop and rely on quilters stopping in and checking out that area.
How many more books do you think you could sell if you let your newsletter subscribers know about the techniques or quilts featured in the book along side a “Buy Now” button?
Using my strategies, I sell an average of 50 books each month, and sometimes more than 200 books, just with a few emails.
And I order the books after I have the orders! No inventory, no unsold books.
It really is that easy, when you set up your webpage the right way and you send the right message to your newsletter subscribers!
By nature your website, just like your brick and mortar quilt shop, is passive – it sits there waiting for people to show up.
At least your brick and mortar shop is located around other businesses where people can see it.
Before a visitor clicks through to your website, it is simply a few bits and bytes floating among trillions of gigabytes of data in cyberspace. In essence, it’s just a figment of thin air until someone finds it among the millions of other websites.
What chance do you have?
It’s no secret that you need a strategy that will let the people know on a continuing basis that you are out there, providing great resources.
Don’t Continue to Settle For a Passive Website When You Can Generate Activity and Increase Your Income.
We both know that your time is limited, and this needs to be simple, simple and not take much time in order to work for you.
After all, you have a quilt shop to run, employees to take care of, inventory to track, new items to stock, and a billion other things to do to keep your business afloat.
How can you possibly take on something that will suck up hours of your precious time?
That’s the beauty of this system.
If you could invest 45 minutes in something that would generate a hundred dollars or more in sales in one day, and then keep on producing for months on end, would you be interested?
The thing is, the hundred dollars today will increase as the number of your newsletter subscribers gets larger. Plus with my system, you will also get ideas for ways to add newsletter subscribers beyond just the quilters who visit your shop.
And with little or no additional cost.
So, How Does it all Work?
It’s simple. Really.
I bet you’ve heard that before.
Maybe you have even invested your hard earned cash in your website already, only to be disappointed in the results. So you are skeptical when you hear that something is simple, especially when it comes to something online.
Oh, I’m not saying it can be done with the snap of your fingers, and it will take you 30 seconds a day in order to generate hundreds of dollars in sales.
I know you are smarter than that.
I have spent hundreds of hours creating the formula, and then changing things around, always testing something, to get the best possible result.
And now, it is a foolproof formula – exactly like “fill in the blanks.” And just that simple.
And the beauty is that there are just 3 simple steps.
But before I give them to you, I want to warn you – don’t get scared about the website stuff, because when you have the right systems, even a child can do this.
On the other hand, since many children are so good at computers, maybe the more apt description is that “even a 57 year old can do it.”
So, here goes:
- Set up your webpage with the right elements describing a quilting tool, fabric, workshop, etc. (just one topic per page)
- Send an email out to your newsletter subscribers letting them know about the webpage
- Collect cash and send merchandise
And, even better – you will be collecting cash from several different sources – not just from sales of your products.
The key is knowing the formula – where to put the various pieces of information on each web page and what to include on the web page and in the email you send to your subscribers.
But, do these things wrong, and your newsletter subscribers will disappear and your customers will hate you.
The good news is that it’s all been figured out for you!
That’s right.
I spent every day last year writing, re-writing, testing and re-testing to see what works so I could get the best results for my business.
I know it may be hard to believe, but I want you to succeed and not suffer like I did.
And I am as committed to helping you increase the revenue for the online portion of your business as I am to helping beginning quilters learn how to quilt.
Right now, you may be saying to yourself:
“OK. Maybe Your System Works for You, but How Do I Know It Will Work for Me?”
Frankly, I can’t tell you that it will generate a minimum amount of income for you. Or that your list of newsletter subscribers will increase by a certain number over a period of time.
Because I don’t know that you will follow the system and include everything that needs to be there to ensure your success – as foolproof as I have made everything.
Many folks look at something and before they even try to follow the formula, they change some of the components, without having any experience to tell them what works and what might not work.
What I can tell you is that the two or three internet marketers I have run into who are in completely different markets are extremely successful using a system that is almost exactly like mine.
I suppose you could track them down and follow their system – if they sold it.
But one of them doesn’t even sell his highly successful system. He wants to keep it a secret.
Besides, why buy something from someone who doesn’t understand the quilting market and quilters?

Two ways, actually.
For more than five years, I have taught beginner quilters how to make some amazing quilts. And since you are likely a quilter – or spend time with quilters – you know how complex making a quilt is.

But, more importantly, I have taught people how to start an online quilting business – from scratch.
The thing is – I remember what it was like sitting through multi-day seminars, walking out with tons of information, not knowing where to begin.
Because I got so desperate, I hired a personal coach to sort it all out and help me set up my business. But he only helped me set up the business – I had to figure it all out once my website was live.
I know that not many folks want to spend thousands of dollars to hire someone to take them by the hand and walk them through the process day by day.
But they do want someone to present the information in a way that they can easily understand and be successful.
For years at my marketing conferences, I was used as an example of how someone can take a hobby and turn it into a thriving online business.
And because I am always willing to share my information with others, my marketing friends began asking me how I did it.
I've always been willing to help anyone, whether they are in quilting or not. (I wish someone had given me all of the pieces to the puzzle when I started, instead of having to figure it out and spend thousands of hours and tens of thousands of dollars.)
