How to Make Triangles from Strips of Fabric

"Quilters hang out on the "seamy" side of town."

Greetings Quilter -

Plans for the online class are progressing. The first class will be a simple - really easy!! - baby quilt. That was the most requested class.

Others will follow along.

I have the fabric and pattern and will begin putting the materials together this week. So, you should be hearing more details soon. Possibly next week.

Penny's Postcard Posse - Remember our troops! We are Rounding up fabric postcards for the 4th of July, and have extended the deadline to June 1 so you can get yours mailed in. I'll be posting new free fabric postcard patterns on www.QuiltBlockLibrary.com. We are looking for thousands of cards to send to the Middle East.

Update on the m. mouse 15th birthday quilt

batik fabric for cat quilt

Fabric for m. mouse's 15th birthday quilt.

Last week, I started playing around with fabric and blocks. My first pass at using the Cats and Mice quilt block from last week was somewhat disappointing.

I had wanted to make some kind of secondary design with the strips. It may still work out, but with the wide variety of colors of fabric, it wasn't so easy.

So I tried a different Cats and Mice quilt block pattern.

Because this one has the strips across it, it was a little easier to set up the quilt so there is a kind of background design.

This pattern presents some opportunity to make this look like a scrap quilt, too.

I still haven't decided which pattern to use, and will spend more time playing around. Either one will probably have the cat batik in the center.

I may end up making a few blocks to see which I like better. In the meantime, if you have a thought, let him know: send an email to m. mouse

In the meantime, Happy Happy!

And now for the rest of the news - -

Happy Quilting!

striped binding

Learn now to make striped binding with this month's Binding DVD Club selection - Binding with Striped Binding.

How to Bind a Quilt Club and DVD

This month’s Binding DVD will show you how to bind a quilt using striped binding.

This takes a very traditional method of binding a quilt, and adds a little spice to it. The corners are mitered and generally this is a single fold binding.

You will learn how to sew the strips together, cut the binding and sew it on for a perfect finish to your quilt.

Active Square Patch and above members of TheQuiltingCoach.com and active members of the Official How to Bind a Quilt Club will receive this DVD for free as a benefit of their membership.

Non members can order this DVD individually, or you can join the Club. Remember, the DVD showing how to bind a quilt using striped fabric will be available only until the end of May. Then it, too, disappears.

You may have questions about the Binding Club, and here are the answers:

  • These will be all new methods of binding than are in The Ultimate How to Bind a Quilt DVD Mentor
  • Each DVD will be the same format as the DVDs in The Ultimate How to Bind a Quilt DVD Mentor - each DVD will be from start to finish demonstrating everything you need to know about the style of binding
  • You can cancel your membership any time you would like - no obligation, no hurt feelings
  • Square Patch Members and above of TheQuiltingCoach.com will receive a new DVD each month as a benefit of membership. So, you might want to join up and get all of the benefits of membership, including the Binding Video of the Month
  • You can order each one separately - pick and choose only the ones you want. There will be a new and different method each month for at least 10 months, or until I run out of methods.
  • At the end of each month, that month's video will be taken off the market. Yup, you have until May 30 to order the Binding with Stripes video separately.

Eavesdrop on a Telephone Conversation - Lea Ingram

lea ingrham

Lea Ingram is a quilter from Hawaii who makes some amazing quilts.

Many of her quilts are created from fabric she dyes or paints.
Her quilts have a traditional feel while expressing the beauty of Hawaii, the Hawaiian life, and family.

Lea also does workshops, and I am contemplating having her do a live workshop for a gathering of quilters here in San Diego later this year.

Lea joins us on May 26 for our Eavesdrop on a Telephone Conversation. Mark your calendar - more information will be coming.

Tips – Sewing Strips to Make Triangles for Blocks

Last week we showed a quilt made from triangles that were sewn together as strips of fabric and then cut into triangles.

Several quilters asked about the technique for creating these strips and making triangles, so today - here it is!

Sewing strips to make triangles that you can then place into squares is about the easiest way to make some interesting blocks that I know. As you can see in the quilts shown as examples, you can’t even really see that these are squares. But, they are, making them really easy to piece.

To make them, first cut strips. In these examples, I have cut strips that are the same width, one dark and one light fabric. In fact, you can cut more than one strip and make multi-colored triangles, which will give you a completely different effect.

sew one dark strip and one light strip together

Once the strips are cut, press the seam allowance to one side. I have pressed mine toward the dark fabric.

The least complicated way to do this is to make 45º triangles, basically quarter-square triangles. That way it will take 4 triangles to make one square.

Using a triangle template, or just a ruler that is marked with a 45º angle, cut one side of the triangle. Then turn your ruler around and cut the other side.

Continue cutting and turning your ruler or triangle template until you reach the end of the strip.

When you are ready to sew them together, you can sew 4 triangles together as if they were quarter-square triangles.

To make a quilt, cut several strips using different color combinations. Once you have your triangles cut, enjoy and play with them. You can make all kinds of different designs by simply changing the placement of the triangles.

These two quilts were made from triangles cut from strips of fabric. The squares in the quilt with the dark centers used triangles with the dark fabric on the tip of the triangle. The squares with white centers used triangles with the dark fabric on the bottom.

In the quilt on the left, narrow strips were sewn onto the center square on point, then the large triangles were added to make the quilt a square.

Postcard Quilts for the Troops

July 4th Roundup Next - Deadline June 1!

Penny's Postcard Posse has sent more than 15,000 fabric postcards to our troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and the hospital in Germany.

As quilters, we know what those postcards mean to the men and women who recieve them. Some who get them receive no other mail from home. And for all of them, it's a reminder of the wonderful freedoms they are fighting for and the comforts they will enjoy when they return home.

The 4th of July Roundup is in full swing - the deadline is June 1

It's not too early to start making patriotic cards for our 4th of July Roundup. This will mark our 4th Year! Check out the postcard patterns on www.QuiltBlockLibrary.com I will continue to add designs, and patterns for the fabric postcards are always free.

Remember the Birthday Roundup - Diane had a great idea to send over a package of Birthday postcards that can be handed to soldiers the day of their birthday! What a great idea.

So, we've set up a deadline of August 10, and there is plenty of time to get some postcards made by then. She will send over a big box and the soldier "in charge" can hand them out as birthdays arrive. I will be adding birthday-themed postcard designs to www.QuiltBlockLibrary.com, so keep on checkin'

To make the 4th of July deadline, get your cards to Diane by May 20.

Please send your cards to:
Diane Malaznik
14215 Westmore St.
Livonia, MI 48154-4149

Diane is doing a fabulous job keeping the pictures updated, and if you have sent cards in, let your friends and family know that they can see pictures of them here: www.Fabric-Postcards.com

Remember you can get FREE postcard patterns at: www.QuiltBlockLibrary.com

Special Note - we are in the process of changing the Picture Gallery on the Fabric-Postcards.com site. It may take a few days, so bear with us. Not to worry - We have all of the pictures and will get everything squared away soon.
