The Crowfoot Quilt Block

"Family is a lifetime of treasured memories."

Greetings Quilter -

If you missed our Eavesdrop on a Telephone Conversation webinar yesterday, you missed some great information about hand quilting.

Scores of quilters joined us on the telephone, online, or both to learn about the various tools for hand quilting. From thimbles to hoops, now those quilters will know which tools will be right for their hand quilting, and they will know how to hold their needle, thimble and quilt to make perfect hand quilting stitches.

If you missed the webinar, you can get a CD recording of the call and a DVD of the video that was presented during the webinar by visiting - Hand Quilting Webinar.

These resources will make your hand quilting much easier and more fun - plus you will get beautiful hand quilting stitches using time-tested techniques.

The Fat Quarter Quilt

This week, the Fat Quarter Quilt was trimmed and layered.

As usual, the fabric I wanted to use for the backing was not available any more at the quilt shop, so I settled for a different backing.

Quilting daughter, Stephanie, was home for part of the week, and when I showed her the backing fabric, she said "It doesn't really go with the front." While I agreed, I also pointed out that it will be on the back, and sometimes it is good to have a surprise on the back of your quilt.

Member Quilts

A t-shirt quilt from How-to-Quilt.com member Chris Nigh

Often How-to-Quilt.com members send in pictures of their quilts. And we certainly love to get them.

Until recently we had a Gallery of Quilts, where pictures could be posted. However, because of random internet lurkers dropping viruses in the gallery, we shut it down, and are now going to feature member quilts each week in our online newsletter.

So, if you have a quilt to share, drop us an email at: comments@how-to-quilt.com and include the story and picture of your quilt and your picture, too - if you'd like. We will adjust the size, if necessary.

This week we are featuring a t-shirt quilt made by Chris Nigh

You'll notice that there are several Harley-Davidson t-shrits in this fabulous quilt. The pattern was a Harley-Davidson pattern, and is a great way to handle large t-shirt pictures without having large squares.

Chris sent this with her picture:

"Everyone who has seen it thinks it is the best t-shirt quilt they have EVER seen. I am proud cause it is the first full size quilt I have EVER made. I am in the process of finding more t-shirts so I can do another one. Not sure what my next project will be but I will look for another unusual thing for sure. Something not too many folks do.

"Thanks again,"

Chris

We've got several member quilts lined up for the upcoming weeks, and are sure that you will be inspired by quilts made by beginners and intermediate quilters alike.

m. mouse is having a birthday party and you are invited!

This month our official how-to-quilt.com diabetic Siamese kitty turns 15 years old, and we are celebrating - big time.

m. mouse has been our quilting ambassador for several years now, and he enjoys every minute of the spotlight. So to celebrate his birthday, he put together a special deal.

Because he is a cat, after all, his favorite how-to-quilt.com product is the Robin's Nest DVD Mentor. While he wasn't around for the filming (since he was in Houston with quilting daughter, Stephanie, at the time), he does love birds.

And he enjoys watching the 4 robins on this wall hanging and wondering when the eggs will hatch. (Well, he is a cat.)

So, he and our ace shipper, Cindy, put together a really special m. mouse birthday deal.

Only until they are gone, you can get the Robin's Nest Diamond set for the tiny investment of the Basic set. And you can pay for it using the 3 pay program.

That means that you get all of the added features of the Robin's Nest Diamond - but with none of the additional cost.

How good is that?

But, there are ony 30 of these sets, and we aren't quite sure whether we will re-order these once they are sold out.

So, rush on over and get one before they run out: www.RobinQuilt.com

Remember, this deal is only until they are gone. With 30 packages and 47,000 quilters, that could be just minutes!

Tips - Thread for your Quilts

thread for quilting

Good quilting involves good thread.

Lots of us get so caught up in fabric choice that we overlook the importance of the thread that stitches it all together! Many times thread choice is the difference between a decent quilt project and a fabulous one.

Make sure your quilts fall under the “fabulous” category with these thread tips:

  • For piecing quilts, 100 percent cotton thread is best. Cotton thread is easier to remove if a mistake is made, plus it blends nicely with the fabrics since the majority of quilts are made with cotton fabric.
  • For hand appliqué projects with a running or rocking stitch, use a silk thread. The thread will be nearly invisible.
  • 30-weight cotton fabric is best for hand appliqué using the buttonhole stitch.
  • If you want your quilting stitches to blend with your quilt top and backing, use a neutral color – taupe, beige or gray.
  • Machine appliqué works best with monofilament threading on the top layer and a mid to heavy weight bobbin (60 weight is a good average)
  • Before beginning your quilt project, make sure your thread is not rotten. Firmly holding the spool in one hand, roll off several inches of thread and give it a yank. Does the thread snap or curl? Snapping might be the sign of old thread. Just in case, buy a new spool and throw out the questionable one (or use it for smaller projects like ornaments or home décor projects that won’t have to withstand numerous washings.)

The Crowfoot Quilt Block

teh crowfoot quilt block

This traditional 9 patch quilt block is part of the Trick or Treat at the Haunted House Halloween quilt - an original pattern.

This quilt block has tons of patches in it, making it a little bit challenging to sew together. If you watch your seams and bias edges carefully, you will have a great deal of success with this block.

For the next few weeks, several additional Halloween quilt block patterns will be featured.

Get a free download of this quilt block pattern at www.QuiltBlockLibrary.com and check out the other patterns there, too!

Enjoy!
