Storm at Sea Quilt Block Video Demonstration and
New Quilting Resource

Greetings Quilter -

Every once in a while I get lucky and discover a new quilting resource that makes an old quilt block easier.

Often I wonder why I wasn't clever enough to figure out the secret technique because when it is revealed, it seems so simple.

Regardless, I'm glad when someone does and is able to share the "find" with other quilters. That sharing creates opportunities for quilters everywhere to take a different look at a block or quilt that they might have avoided.

Recently that happened here. A brand new resource from our friends at C&T came in, and when I took a look at what was inside, I was amazed how just a few techniques could make the difference between frustration and ease.

The resource is A New Light on Storm at Sea Quilts by Wendy Mathson. It is jam packed with tips that will take all of the frustration out of sewing the Storm at Sea block - plus give you some wonderful ideas for beautiful quilts using different color placements in the same block.

You'll find some details below and a link for all of the information. You can reserve your copy of this new quilting treasure until this Friday, June 12 at midnight Pacific Time. Don't miss out. Even if you don't plan to make this quilt soon, someday you will be inspired by an image in the book.

The Online Baby Quilt Class is rolling along. After the first week, hundreds of quilters have checked in and are enjoying the video and clear instructions for making this quilt.

Plus, once you have made this quilt, you will have a ton of skills to make other quilts. You'll find more information below: Online Baby Quilt Class

In the meantime, Happy Happy!

And now for the rest of the news - -

Happy Quilting!

Tips for Tying Quilts

tying a quilt

Tying a quilt can be done with embroidery floss, perle cotton or other thicker thread.

Tying is a quick and easy way to secure the layers of your quilt.

There are several different types of thread you can use, including, but not limited to: yarn, embroidery floss, perle cotton, ribbon, cording.

In my early quilting days, I thought it was kind of "cheating" to tie a quilt.

Then someone gave me a quilt for baby quilting daughter, Stephanie. It was a wonderful flannel quilt, just the perfect size, and it was tied with yarn.

After I used the quilt several times, washed it, dried it in the drier, threw it in the diaper bag, laid it on the floor, I understood the value of tying a quilt.

If that quilt had been quilted, I probably would have hung it on the wall and never used it. And the warm and fuzzy thing that would have been used to wrap my darling daughter would have been just some ordinary blanket from a layette set.

How boring would that have been?

Instead, Stephanie got to cuddle in a flannel blanket filled with the love of the quilter who crafted that treasure.

Tying a quilt is really easy, yet there are a few techniques that will make the tying go faster and easier and make your finished quilt stay together longer:

  • Plan the arrangement of your knots before you begin tying.
  • If you use batting, use a bonded batting or batting with a scrim so the batting will stay in place in your quilt.
  • Leave a tail long enough to ensure that the knot will stay in the quilt, but not so long that it will be distracting to your quilt design or function
  • Make sure that you use enough knots to secure the layers of your quilt so the layers aren’t flapping around.
  • Use square knots to prevent your ties from coming un-tied.
  • Be sure your stitch is large enough that it won’t rip the backing fabric, but not too large that it causes the fabric to get all bunched up.

Most quilters shy away from this block because they think it is "too hard." Using the tips and techniques divulged in this resource, making your quilt will be fun and painless using this intriguing Storm at Sea block. Plus, you can make a traditional-looking quilt or something really fun and modern, using the same block - just by putting the colors in different places.

a new light on storm at sea quilts

This new quilting resource will take all of the mystery out of sewing the traditional Storm at Sea quilt - and it will show you how to create beautiful and unique quilts using just the Storm at Sea block.

Wendy Mathson is my kind of quilter. She remembers what it was like to be a beginner, and she makes things as easy as possible and as clear as she can - especially for this block.

She includes detailed instructions for sewing each patch, and shows you how to fix the patches that don't come out right - something I have never seen in a book before.

In addition, most book writers leave it up to us to figure out how to press the seam allowances for the flattest quilt top.

Not Wendy - she includes tips for pressing the seam allowances, because how you press the seam allowances can affect how pointy the tips on your triangles and diamonds are.

And, her illustrations include pictures of actual fabric - not those color blobs that leave to your imagination which is the right side of the fabric and which is the wrong side.

In this treasure, you'll know right away how to cut the fabric and how to sew the patches together.

This brand new resource is barely in quilt shops. As a matter of fact, maybe your quilt shop got it in and sold it out the moment it arrived, because this is certain to become the premier resource for trouble-free stitching the Storm at Sea block and creating beautiful heirloom quilts.

You can reserve your copy right now and probably still have it before any of your quilting buddies get theirs.

Included in A New Light on Storm at Sea Quilts are tons of ideas for different ways to make this block into a quilt. From a flower garden to a fish pond to Christmas ornaments, it's all there - stirring your imagination or to use to make your own quilt.

Or possibly you knew, but didn't have time before, and now there's a Baby Shower coming up. You want to make a baby quilt for her, and need it quick.

Or, maybe you are a beginning quilter and want to learn how to make a quilt starting with an easy pattern so you can get your feet wet and learn the basics of quilting.

When quilters asked to learn how to make a quick and easy baby quilt, I pondered what that might look like.

Then I remembered my favorite baby quilt when quilting daughter, Stephanie, was a baby. It was a simple flannel quilt given to me by one of my mom's friends.

So I drew up a pattern, cut the fabric and made the quilt - recording every step along the way so I could share them with you.

And now, all of the video instruction is ready for you right here in TheQuiltingCoach.com.

This easy-to-follow online Baby Quilt Class includes 8 Lessons. In each Lesson, you will see a video showing you exactly what to do and how to do it. Postcard Quilts for the Troops

Birthday Roundup Next - Deadline August 10!

Penny's Postcard Posse has sent more than 15,000 fabric postcards to our troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and the hospital in Germany.

As quilters, we know what those postcards mean to the men and women who recieve them. Some who get them receive no other mail from home. And for all of them, it's a reminder of the wonderful freedoms they are fighting for and the comforts they will enjoy when they return home.

The Birthday Roundup is in full swing - the deadline is August 10

Diane had a great idea to send over a package of Birthday postcards that can be handed to soldiers the day of their birthday! What a great idea.

So, we've set up a deadline of August 10, and there is plenty of time to get some postcards made by then. She will send over a big box and the soldier "in charge" can hand them out as birthdays arrive. I will be adding birthday-themed postcard designs to www.QuiltBlockLibrary.com, so keep on checkin'

To make the Birthday Roundup deadline, get your cards to Diane by August 10.

Please send your cards to:
Diane Malaznik
14215 Westmore St.
Livonia, MI 48154-4149

Diane is doing a fabulous job keeping the pictures updated, and if you have sent cards in, let your friends and family know that they can see pictures of them here: www.Fabric-Postcards.com

Remember you can get FREE postcard patterns at: www.QuiltBlockLibrary.com

Special Note - we are in the process of changing the Picture Gallery on the Fabric-Postcards.com site. It may take a few days, so bear with us. Not to worry - We have all of the pictures and will get everything squared away soon.
