Scrap Heart Quilt - Idea for February 2009

"Finished is way better than perfect!"

3 Kings Journey Wall Hanging Quilt as You Go Project now with Borders

Greetings Quilter -

The 3 Kings Journey Quilt as You Go project is moving right along. I decided to add sashing with cornerstones to the outside of the quilt, followed by borders.

I did need to so some adjusting because the blocks were slightly narrower than they were high. It all seems to be working out, even though everything was attached to a foundation, giving me slightly less flexibility in terms of trimming the blocks.

I have discovered that using my chalk, I can mark the quilt top and sew the next strips on, squaring up what is already there.

And speaking of chalk, several quilters asked where they could get the Bohin Mechanical Chalk, so I was on the phone last night to my friend, Rosie, of Rosie's Calico Cupboard.

She will let me know what kind of special deal she can get for us on this chalk, and I'll let you know.

Post Your Quilt Picture for All to See

It's been a long time coming, but I have finally gotten an Image Gallery set up so we can post our quilt pictures. Oh, and quilting cat and dog pictures as well!

To keep spammers out, you'll need to register before you can post your pictures, but please do and share your treasures with us.

It's fairly easy to use. The first time, it may be a little confusing, but stick with it.

Once you register and are logged in, find the link to Upload File

It will open a page where you can choose an image file from your computer. There is a limit on the size, but it is pretty big. Not to worry, it will resize the picture once it is uploaded. You can add several at the same time, if you would like.

Once your file(s) are uploaded, a new page will open and you simply click on Continue. On the next page, you will select a Gallery to add your picture(s) to. Select the Members Quilts Gallery, and add information - the Name of the Quilt, your name and a description. Tell us a story about the quilt, if you would like. I have added several of my quilts as an example.

Feel free to share your animals with us as well! And, I have added pictures of quilts and cats that I have saved from emails. I don't have all of the information, so feel free to add details if they are yours, or email me with the details, and I will add them.

This should be fun!

Let's get to the quilting news!

Happy Quilting!

P.S. Watch for news later in the week about the new How to Bind a Quilt Club. Each month I will be producing a DVD showing techniques for a different way to bind a quilt. Each will be different from any of the methods shown before. Members of TheQuiltingCoach.com will be able to see them online, and Star and Penny's Inner Circle Members will get the DVD in the mail FREE each month. I will be updating the site today and tomorrow.

The first new technique for February will be sewing binding on quilts with curves.

February Quilt Idea - A Scrap Heart Quilt

A Scrappy Heart Charm Quilt

If you have ever made a scrap quilt, you might have noticed that, in some ways, it is more difficult to make than a quilt using all new fabric.

Several years ago, I took a workshop and made this little heart wall hanging.

The project was to take quarter-square triangle patches made from scraps and surround the heart appliqué patches, creating a secondary design - like maybe stars points around the hearts.

I spent hours moving the patches around, and eventually I just sewed them together. In some places, you might be able to see the stars.

Mostly, though, I just saw frustration, and I was never inclined to try another scrap quilt.

This year, I’ve decided to make some new attempts at scrap quilts. After all, my scrap pile has outgrown its cardboard boxes, and I feel compelled to do something creative with all that fabric.

There are a few “rules” to help make scrap quilts successful. I’m not sure that I followed them as I made this quilt. Following them might make your quilt a little more successful than mine:

  • include something dark
  • include something light
  • include something dull
  • include something bright
  • combine large, medium and small-scale prints
  • use bright accent colors sparingly and consistently throughout the quilt to keep your eye moving
  • use neutrals to give your eye a rest (black and/or white could be considered neutral
  • pay attention to the amount of dark and light contrast within the individual prints of the fabrics you choose
