Penny's Pumpkin Quilt Block
"I'm creative. You can't expect me to be neat too."
Greetings Quilter - Penny's Postcard Posse is Rounding up fabric postcards for Halloween. This is one of my favorite Postcard Roundups, because I think it probably brings back fond memories of Trick or Treat evenings in fun Halloween costumes, and comes as a surprise to the troops abroad who receive the fabric postcards. In addition, I have found that schools love to do the Halloween postcards since it starts off the school year on a kind of fun note while reminding everyone that there are still troops in the Middle East fighting for our freedom. You'll find more information below about the Postcard Posse, including the deadline for getting your fun cards to Diane - plus her address. Diane continues to do a fantastic job gathering the cards and getting them shipped off to the appropriate places. Her experience as a Red Cross volunteer gives her some fantastic contacts and information about where the cards are most needed. She appreciates all of your notes of encouragement - as well as enjoying the notes you write to the men and women on your cards. Keep them coming! In addition, check out the thousands of pictures of postcards sent in previous Penny's Postcard Posse Roundups - www.PennysPostcardPosse.com This week will see even more progress on the Fat Quarter Quilt. With the top completely sewn and the sashing with cornerstones surrounding the center, it's been hanging on my flannel wall while I test various fabrics and designs for the border. I've settled in on a Seminole design using blue batiks with a splash of purple. Watch for news on my progress.
Until later - - - Happy Quilting!
Book of the Month - Quilter's Academy by Harriet & Carrie Hargrave
Mother and daughter Harriet and Carrie Hargrave have teamed up to create a quilting book for beginners that even advanced quilters will enjoy. The Quilter’s Academy Vol. 1 – The Freshman year is set to be released in mid-September. Harriet is a well-known quilting teacher and has authored a number of books, including The Art of Classic Quilt Making and Heirloom Machine Quilting. Harriet has been a serious quilter since 1974, initially learning the craft from her mother. Harriet’s quilting career began like many others, selling her creations at craft fairs, teaching adult ed classes, and opening her own quilt shop. When Harriet started learning new quilting techniques, she put her teaching experience to work writing books about quilting. It’s no wonder her daughter Carrie has picked up quilt making just as her own mother did – learning the craft from her mom. Carrie began working full time in the quilting business when Harriet decided to close her quilt shop. Carrie couldn’t imagine the family not having the store, so she offered to manage it. Now the mother and daughter team get to work together on many various aspects of quilting – designing, teaching and writing. The Quilter’s Academy, published by C&T Publishing, includes nine skill building written “classes.” The Hargrave ladies give you 13 traditional patterns and instructions plus teach you how to design your own quilt patterns. The book does a great job of explaining the basics and will help the beginning quilter make beautiful quilts. Don’t skip over this just because you have more advanced quilting skills. There are plenty of techniques and ideas for the advanced quilter to enjoy too! This is the Penny's Inner Circle Book of the Month for www.TheQuiltingCoach.com, and promises to be a valuable resource for many of my future projects. Thread for Your Quilting Projects
Good quilting involves good thread. Lots of us get so caught up in fabric choice that we overlook the importance of the thread that stitches it all together! Many times thread choice is the difference between a decent quilt project and a fabulous one. Make sure your quilts fall under the “fabulous” category with these thread tips:
President of Superior Threads, Bob Purcell, was a guest for our Eavesdrop on a Telephone Conversation. Get more information about thread from this interview. Postcard Quilts for the Troops – Halloween Roundup!

Featured Block in Video Pumpkin Quilt Block
An easy Pumpkin quilt block used to be difficult to find - until a couple of years ago when I designed this one. Prior to that, the only ones I found were applique or very complex. This one is a relatively simple 9 patch and can be easily made large or small. As a matter of fact, this block has been used to make fabric postcards for the troops. Just make a block that is 3 inches square, add a 1 inch border to each side, layer it and finish the edges. Your postcard is ready to quilt, sign and mail to Diane. Get a free download of this quilt block pattern at www.QuiltBlockLibrary.com and check out the other patterns there, too! You'll also find the Pumpkin fabric postcard pattern.
Enjoy!
