Broken Dishes Quilt Block
"Quilters hang out on the "seamy" side of town."
Greetings Quilter - Today (Monday, Sept. 7) is the last day to reserve your copy of the brand new quilting resource, Quilter's Academy. This is a must-have book that promises to be a fabulous resource for all skill-level quilters. You'll find more information below. This week will see even more progress on the Fat Quarter Quilt. The border strips are now finished, and I am still pondering what to do with the corners. Because the design of the border strips is somewhat complex, it will be difficult to extend them into the corners and then miter them. So, I am contemplating cornerstones, and have tried several different color fabrics. I made a pinwheel block, and will be playing with other possibilities this week.
Until later - - - Happy Quilting!
Book of the Month - Quilter's Academy by Harriet & Carrie Hargrave
Mother and daughter Harriet and Carrie Hargrave have teamed up to create a quilting book for beginners that even advanced quilters will enjoy. The Quilter’s Academy Vol. 1 – The Freshman year is set to be released in mid-September. Harriet is a well-known quilting teacher and has authored a number of books, including The Art of Classic Quilt Making and Heirloom Machine Quilting. Harriet has been a serious quilter since 1974, initially learning the craft from her mother. Harriet’s quilting career began like many others, selling her creations at craft fairs, teaching adult ed classes, and opening her own quilt shop. When Harriet started learning new quilting techniques, she put her teaching experience to work writing books about quilting. It’s no wonder her daughter Carrie has picked up quilt making just as her own mother did – learning the craft from her mom. Carrie began working full time in the quilting business when Harriet decided to close her quilt shop. Carrie couldn’t imagine the family not having the store, so she offered to manage it. Now the mother and daughter team get to work together on many various aspects of quilting – designing, teaching and writing. The Quilter’s Academy, published by C&T Publishing, includes nine skill building written “classes.” The Hargrave ladies give you 13 traditional patterns and instructions plus teach you how to design your own quilt patterns. The book does a great job of explaining the basics and will help the beginning quilter make beautiful quilts. Don’t skip over this just because you have more advanced quilting skills. There are plenty of techniques and ideas for the advanced quilter to enjoy too! This is the Penny's Inner Circle Book of the Month for www.TheQuiltingCoach.com, and promises to be a valuable resource for many of my future projects. Fabric for Quilts
To quilt, we must have fabric. That’s why this month’s “tool” feature is on fabric – specifically the new fabric line designed by entertainer Marie Osmond. In addition to the Vegas shows she will be performing with brother Donny beginning in September, Marie has turned her love of crafts into a business as well. Her latest venture is fabric design. Marie’s “Gypsy Breeze” collection is a mix of traditional prints in fashion colors. Versions of light lime and various blues really do make the fabrics seem breezy. Marie said she was inspired to create this fabric collect while traveling with her brothers in their 50th anniversary tour. The greens and blues are reminiscent of the globe that they traveled while on tour. Her Blanc et Noir Fashion fabrics feature rich blacks, whites and fushias that are so popular. Her Cachet line offers more traditional patterns and colors in wine, ecru, rose and beige. Her Fusion line features a fashionable mix of florals and animal skins (like leopard) perfect for quilts, clothing or home decor. Marie offers fabulously boxed fat quarters in her fabric lines in addition to yardage. She also has a wonderful tin of charm fabric that any quilt lover would like to receive. To see the fabrics for yourself, see them online at www.quiltingtreasures.com, or ask for them in your favorite fabric store. Postcard Quilts for the Troops – Halloween Roundup!
