Greetings Quilter -

Several years ago, the superintendent of the school district I work for announced that he would retire. He had been with the district almost 40 years, and had taught and been a principal at several schools.

A group of us decided to make a memory quilt for his retirement – creating a schoolhouse block representing each school in the district, and blocks representing the district office and bus garage. We also decided that it would be fun to put a picture of the school marquee in each block.

Not being fans of detailed appliqué, we decided to use clip art, then print the picture of each marquee on fabric, and appliqué a simple square onto each school block.

All went so well that we decided to extend the fabric printing to create fabric photos of the superintendent – transferring pictures from old school yearbooks onto the fabric – and placing them in the window of the schoolhouse block where he either taught or was a principal.

The quilt was fantastic! It circled the district for employees, parents, and students to sign. He was very pleased when it was presented to him at his retirement party.

Several years earlier, I made a quilt for our out-going PTA President. I spent hours trying to find some way to transfer a prized picture onto fabric. Eventually I found a method, but it involved some sticky "goo," it ruined the photograph and because of the process, the photo was actually reversed on the fabric - good thing there was no writing in the background because it would have been backwards!

Oh How I Wish I Had the Book More Photo Fun before
I made Any of Those Photo Quilts!

Disappointment set in when we realized that (after the superintendent's quilt was completed) all of the clip art and photos printed on fabric would wash away if the fabric got wet! We didn't know the fabric needed to be pre-treated before it was printed on.

And I didn’t tell you how many times we had to run pieces of fabric through the printer in order to get one good copy. Using tape to hold the fabric on the paper, sometimes the fabric or tape would jam in the printer. Other times the fabric would stretch one way or the other resulting in a cockeyed picture. Oh, the time and fabric we wasted!

And with the PTA President's quilt, the fabric was fine, and she could wash the quilt - but that process actually embedded the photo in a layer of stiff goop onto the fabric we sewed on the back of the quilt, making that section of the quilt feel like a board.

As computers have gotten better, transferring most any kind of photo or image onto a piece of fabric has become really easy. Using a special "solution," you can print onto any type of fabric - including denim - in any size that will fit through your computer printer.

And, because printing on the fabric is so easy, it's even more fun to create special images or change the look of your photos as you print them.

But where do you get the ideas?

If you are anything like I am, sometimes I just sit there, looking at a photograph, not knowing where to begin or how to make it more interesting than just a photo on a quilt.

As you can see below, most of the time, I just take a photo and transfer it straight onto the fabric - nothing fancy, not much original - just a picture.

All I really need are a few ideas to start me to thinking about how a simple photo can become something really unique. And with this quilting resource, we can get a great start on some creative images for our quilts.

With the year end holidays and summer weddings imminent, you can give someone the promise of a special quilt, letting them choose the pictures to include in the quilt. And then you can take a look and see if there is a unique look that will make the picture even more special.

Change the color tones to make it look like a different season; take a color picture and turn it into black and white or brown and white for an old-timey look; select a picture of a beautiful sunset and enhance some of the colors to match the fabric in patchwork blocks that will surround the pictures.

Your family and friends will love you for your creativity and thoughtfulness.

  • Make a family tree quilt – with photos of family members on the branches
  • Transfer your favorite vacation pictures to fabric and surround them with blocks or borders that remind you of the great time you had
  • Transfer a picture of newly-weds and create a double wedding ring quilt for a first anniversary present
  • Make a fun quilt with pictures of your favorite pet sprinkled all around
  • Create a year-end present for a teacher or club leader with pictures of each person in the class or group

What gift could be better than that? How very personal and original. Something your family and friends will treasure for the rest of their lives, and will share with their family and friends.

This was the first time I transferred a photo onto a quilt. The photo was backward because it used some kind of "goo" that it soaked in. These were hot pads I made for my fellow Rotarians. I printed a Club greeting on denim. Funny, I got them back at the end of the year! Just a joke.

This t-shirt quilt for my dad has flannel Eccentric Star blocks. Each of the blocks has a picture transferred onto flannel using a photo transfer method.
