You thought back on all of the trips to the mall and the hours spent walking through the shops. The days pouring through catalogs searching for something special and unique - something he had never seen before and that he would enjoy having and showing off to his friends.

Throughout the year - and certainly every Christmas - there are thousands of stories about the "ugly" tie or sweater, or the gift that isn't "good enough" - however that is defined.
When my kids were young, we didn't have a lot of money, so I decided to create a wall hanging for my parents' anniversary.
I had taken a class to learn how to paint on fabric, and since they loved their kitties I made a painting of four cats perched on a fence at dusk.
The cats were so cute all lined up along then fence, and I chose some fun background fabric, added a border and quilted around the cats.
I spent hours making the wall hanging, and when I was finished, I was pretty pleased with it.
I carefully wrapped it, and when they were over for dinner on their anniversary, I watched in anticipation as my mom opened the package.
I was proud of the design as well as the craftsmanship of the wall hanging, and I thought she and my dad would be too.
But when she pulled the wall hanging out of the box, the "what the heck am I going to do with this" look appeared.
And my heart sank.
Oh, she smiled and said something - although I can't remember what - put it back in the box, and started playing with her grandkids.
I never saw the wall hanging again. And I assumed (or at least hoped) that she had just kept it in the box and shoved it on a shelf somewhere. I figured that if she didn't want it, I would just get it back and hang it up in my house!
Years later when they moved, I asked her about it, and she had completely forgotten about it.
As a matter of fact, when I described it, she didn't even remember getting it.
And that isn't the only time I've struck out, either.

Choosing Gifts Doesn't Have to Be Difficult
It's a great feeling to give someone a gift they get excited about. And, isn't that what we strive for?
Sometimes as a last resort, I'll just get a fresh bill and place it in a special money wallet. Maybe you've done the same thing - - -
That $5, $10, $20 or $100 is always welcome and appreciated. But cash often disappears quickly and the recipient soon forgets what it was spent on.
There are some creative ways to give money, though.
One Christmas my grandfather, TootToot (his name was Harry Horn and he didn't want to be called anything that sounded like grandfather!), gave me a brand new $5 bill.
His gifts were never ordinary. And often I had to work to even discover what "it" was. And this gift was no different.
That Christmas, I untied the twine and unwrapped the brown paper bag that was the gift wrap, to find a "beautiful" styrofoam brick. Thud!
I probably had "that" look of disappointment on my face when I saw it. The thing was that when TootToot disguised the gift, he was not forthcoming about where it was - and he didn't allow himself to give hints about its location.
He would just shrug his shoulders and pretend that whatever it was, was the gift.
Believing that there was something more than just the styrofoam brick, I spent hours trying to figure out what, or where, the real gift was.
Mom made me put it down for meals, but that search just about ruined my whole day! I just kept turning it around, banging on it, and poking it, searching for an opening.
Finally I discovered a small circle cut out. It was about 1/4 inch in diameter and I could see just the outline of the circle.
It turned out that TootToot had cut out a straw-shaped piece of the styrofoam and pulled it out. He placed a see-through straw that had a $5 bill rolled up inside in the cut-out hole, and then placed a small plug of the styrofoam to fill the hole.
A small glob of glue filled in the circle so I could barely see where the styrofoam had been cut.
Once I figured all of that out, I was pleased beyond belief! The bill never came out of the straw, and I keep it as a cherished memory.
What if You Could Gift a Gift with Real Money - Lots of It?
Most money gifts are simply money. Some are folded like little Christmas trees. Others create a little shirt. And then there's the money tree - a bunch of branches with bills glued on.
On the one hand, some folks think money gifts like that are so cute that they won't take them apart to get at the money - kind of like my keeping the $5 bill rolled up in the straw.

I’ve been making quilts for decades, but it never occurred to me to use money instead of batting inside a quilt.
It sounded like fun.
At first blush, it seemed like a manageable task – find a bunch of shredded money, layer it in a quilt and stitch it together.
The money showed up – no problem. A big bag of uncirculated, brand new, shredded US currency; fully approved for use by the US Treasury. WooHoo!
But as I studied the problem further, a somewhat different challenge presented itself: placing the money inside a quilt in a way that someone would be able to recognize that it was MONEY layered and stitched inside.
It turned out that the finished quilt didn’t feel much different from a quilt with simple batting inside and I quickly realized that telling someone that there was currency inside isn’t as convincing (or fun) as being able to actually see the cash!
Weeks of searching led me to a specialized product that showcases the shredded currency while retaining the look of a traditional patchwork quilt.
The simple process of stitching the little quilt and securing the currency inside was completed – and the Original Money Quilt® was born!
