Dear Quilting Friend,
Who would have believed that wandering around a quilt shop these days could be almost like a visit to a bakery?
We're probably all used to fat quarters by now - you know those 1/4 yards of fabric that are almost square, instead of being long, skinny, useless pieces of fabric.
And when we did our Stack and Whack quilt, we learned about layer cake fabrics – nicely cut 10 1/2 inch squares of fabric color coordinated for the perfect quilt.
I’ll admit that the first time I learned about layer cake fabric was when I was looking for fabric for the Stack and Whack quilt. Those stacks of matched fabric already cut and ready to use were perfect for our Stack and Whack project.
And then there are honey buns. When I first heard about honey buns, I thought of a delicious puffy pastry I might enjoy with my morning coffee.
Alas, however, it turned out that a honey bun in a quilt shop was a roll of fabric cut 1 1/2 inches wide.
To complete our quilt bakery, we have jelly rolls and Bali Pops – rolls of fabric that are cut 2 1/2 inches wide.
For years I have drooled over jelly rolls, yet resisted popping one into my quilting stash, not knowing how I would use it in a quilt.
But then there was the San Diego Quilt Show last year.
Wandering up and down the vendor aisles, I spied a beautiful assortment of Bali Pops and I could no longer resist the temptation to invest in a fine quilting bakery product.
If you aren’t familiar with Bali Pops, they are Hoffman Fabrics’ batik fabric version of jelly rolls – all batiks created in Bali, color coordinated for an easy-to-make quilt.
Two Major Quilting Obstacles - Removed in a Snap
The thing is, that the biggest stumbling block for most quilters is choosing the fabric for their quilt – knowing that the individual fabrics they select will go with each other to create the beautiful design they want to enjoy for decades, and leave for future generations.
And the second biggest obstacle to progress on a quilt is cutting the fabric.
Most of the fabric you bring home from the store is in yards or partial yards. Then you have to line the fabric up so you are sure to get a straight cut, trim off the raw edges making sure everything is even, and then you are ready to cut strips.
And, if you are anything like I am, as careful as you are, the ruler slips, the cat jumps up on the table, someone slams the door and yells “hello” – any one of which causes you to miss the straight cut by the tiniest amount – but it’s enough to make the strips uneven and your blocks not fit when they are sewn together.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the two biggest obstacles to progress on a quilt were completely gone?
They can be when you use jelly rolls or Bali Pops to create your quilt.
Imagine arriving home with color coordinated strips of fabric that are ready for you to begin stitching together.
This was a reality when I arrived home with my Bali Pop.
But, then, there was the issue of how to make a quilt using these beautiful strips of precut fabric.
It did take some time to ponder quilt blocks. Early in the process I decided I wanted to create a traditional patchwork quilt, not a quilt with all over rectangle bars.
I looked at scores of quilt books about jelly roll quilts. I spend hours doing internet searches – looking for a fun design that would maximize the use of my precious fabric strips. After all, when you have limited fabric, you don’t want to use it in seam allowances sewing triangles together.
But so many quilt blocks that use just squares and rectangles are boring. And I didn’t want to invest my time, energy and fabric making a boring quilt.
After weeks, I finally found a couple of blocks that offered some possibilities – the Light and Shadows block and a block called Does Double Duty.
Both of these blocks use only squares and rectangles. What makes them interesting is how you place the light, medium and dark values of fabric.
And since my Bali Pop had all of those values, I knew that either one of those blocks would make a beautiful and interesting quilt using my little collection of strips.
But which block?
As always, which block you choose for your quilt is mostly personal preference. For my quilt, I decided that the placement of the dark fabric in the Light and Shadows quilt block would create a more interesting quilt.
With those decisions made, I started in on the quilt.
Using a simple strip piecing technique, the blocks were completed in a short time.
Using my special system for keeping blocks in order as they are sewn together, it didn’t take long to have the center of the quilt finished and ready for borders.
Because I had plenty of Bali Pop strips remaining, I was able to create a border that looks complicated, but is really easy to sew together.
That border also uses easy strip piecing techniques – so easy beginner quilters will float through its construction using the methods shown in the video.
With Bali Pop strips still remaining, an interesting backing fabric was created and, with just quilting and binding, my quilt was finished.

| The front of the Jelly Roll Quilt |
Of course, my friend, Jim, has watched the progress of the quilt with interest. And – just like any supportive person – said nice things about the design of the quilt (although he still likes the Fat Quarter quilt the best).
But when Anita saw the quilt, she was excited. She is interested in my projects, but always thinks they would be too difficult for her to make.
Not this quilt!
Non-quilter, Anita, almost jumped for joy – saying “this quilt is great – even I could make it.”
And that is the idea: using the instructions in this package, any quilter can create this beautiful quilt easily and in no time at all. And you can use fabric from the bolt, if you prefer.
Because most quilters are visual learners, writing a book, even with good pictures, isn’t nearly as useful as video shot live while the quilter is cutting and sewing on the quilt.
Here at www.How-to-Quilt.com, we take it one step further and show the complete process in video, including a discussion of all of the decisions at various points along the way, and why one technique is chosen over another.
That way, you can use the information for every quilt you make, not just this one single quilt. And you get tons of tips and shortcuts as you follow along making this quilt.
Of course you may choose different colors, and the blocks in your quilt may be positioned a little differently, and possibly you will sew different borders on your quilt. But the bottom line is that you will get all of the information you need to make this jelly roll quilt and most any variation of it.
Here is a small sample of the things you will learn in
5 DVDs Containing More Than
2 hours and 50 minutes
of Pure
Step-by-Step Instruction in
"Machine Quilt Your Jelly Roll Quilt"
My foolproof method for separating light, medium and dark value strips. Value is the basis for the design of most quilts, and if you get it wrong, your finished quilt will look completely different than you planned. Using this simple technique, you will always know the value of each fabric in your quilt – an especially challenging thing since a light fabric in one combination can be a medium fabric in a different combination.
Choosing a block that maximizes the limited fabric for your quilt. Unless you have a bunch of the same jelly roll packages, the fabric you have on hand is limited, and you want to be sure to use it wisely – not watch it get used in a bunch of triangle seams. But you also want your quilt to be beautiful and look like it was made by an experienced quilter. You’ll hear the discussion about which block I chose and why. You will also have the confidence that when you choose a block for a quilt, you’ll know how to make the decision.
Figuring how many strips you need for your quilt. Because your fabric is limited, you want to be sure you have enough to make the size quilt you want and not worry about running out of fabric with just a few blocks left to sew. Using my exclusive fill-in-the-blank fabric calculator, you’ll know how many strips of each value you need, and you can plan your quilt accordingly. This information is worth the investment in this DVD set, since you will be able to use it for each and every quilt you make – whether the quilt is made using jelly rolls or fabric from the bolt.
Techniques for sewing each block together to save time, fabric and maybe your sanity. You’ll probably agree that it takes less time to sew long strips of fabric together than it does to sew individual squares together. Using this shortcut method of sewing blocks, you’ll zip through stitching your blocks in no time at all. This technique can be used in most quilt blocks, freeing up hundreds of hours so you can make more quilts instead of spending time sewing a few together.
Add borders that “square up” your quilt. Most quilters just measure strips and add them to the sides of their quilts. I used to do it that way, and my quilts were never square (or rectangles). Sometimes one side was longer than the other; sometimes the top and bottom were different lengths. And for years, I couldn’t figure out how to fix it. Then one day a quilting teacher showed me how to measure strips for my borders so they would square up the quilt. Most quilting instruction skips that information all together. Why? Is it a secret, or do they not know either? You will know, and every quilt you make from now on will have even sides.
Once you have a squared up quilt, you are ready to add an interesting border – Seminole-style. These fun borders look really complicated, but are really easy to make, using strip-piecing methods like you used to sew the blocks together. By the time you get to the border, you’ll be an expert, and your family and friends will be amazed with your quilting expertise!

| The back of the Jelly Roll Quilt |
Interesting backing fabric anyone? Most quilts use a single piece of fabric on the back. Yes, sometimes it may take two lengths of fabric; but most of the time, quilters use one fabric for the back. Since you are using jelly rolls on the front of the quilt, why not on the back? I had enough strips left to create a fun and interesting backing fabric – and why not? It matches perfectly and is much more interesting than simply sewing the strips together and slapping them on the back.
Techniques for beautiful machine quilting. Now that I have developed a technique for machine quilting on my low-end home sewing machine, my finished quilts look much better than when I began machine quilting years ago. It does take some practice, but more than that, it takes a few tips. Prevent puckering on the back (and even the front) of your quilt by doing these few things before you begin machine quilting. You’ll learn them all so you will be proud of your machine quilting, not wishing you had hired the quilter down the street so you could blame it on her.
And – a hanging sleeve. This quilt is intended to be a wall hanging, which certainly will require a way to hang it. Instead of letting you figure it all out, you’ll see how to attach a hanging sleeve onto the back of your quilt after the quilt is finished. And just in case you want to sew the hanging sleeve as you finish your quilt, making it completely hidden, check out Bonus Gift #4. Once again, most quilting books rely on you to figure this out or pound nails through your quilt into the wall. Not us, your quilt will be complete and ready to hang. You'll be proud to hang it in your home or give it to a friend or family member for their home.
And that's great question. After all, there are dozens of people all over the internet today making the exact same claim. So, what makes me different?
Years after I learned how to quilt, quilting daughter, Stephanie, decided to take sewing classes from Barbara, a lady down the street. Barbara loved to make clothes, and wanted to share her craft with children, so about five of the neighborhood girls went to her house once a week and learned to make clothes.
The clothes were beautiful! And the girls had great fun. Barbara even staged fashion shows in her lovely back yard so these young ladies could show off their accomplishments to family and friends.
Then one day, Stephanie told Barbara that she wanted to learn how to make a quilt. Barbara panicked. She was an expert at making clothes, but knew nothing about how to sew a quilt. I knew that my daughter didn't want to learn how to make a quilt from me - she wanted Barbara to teach her.
So, Barbara and I made an arrangement. During the day, when the girls were in school, I went to Barbara's house and taught her how to make a quilt. With my step-by-step, easy-to-understand approach, Barbara learned how to make a quilt with skill and ease.
This is the same approach I use in all of my video instruction.
This is just a taste of the feedback I have gotten from some of the quilters who have used my video instruction to learn how to make quilts:
So far I have purchased almost everyone of your quilting mentor packages Thank You, Penny. You are Amazing. Keep up the excellent Website information for us that are challenged to do the best we can with what we have. That means now, with your mentor DVD's at my side I have the best information that money can buy to help me along with my quilt. From the bottom of my heart I appreciate all you have done to make it possible for me to do my best work. Paulette Korn I just didnt get how to do Rotary Cutting but watching your video made it all clear!! I am now so glad I have the video and cd discs, and unlike a teacher in a class, you can replay it over and over til you get it, without embarassment. Eileen Bishop Dear Penny. Even the back-side looks great,no pleats at all. I must say i am very proud of myself for doing such a good Job. I already started my second one. That one is a bit harder. But i will try my best. Hello everyone! I'm new to this great group - my name is Carol and I live in Austin, Texas. Penny's Robin's Nest DVD's finally put everything together for me - YAY!!! Before that, my mother in law tried to teach me :) Carol (Austin, Texas) Penny I can't begin to tell you how much I'm enjoying the set of DVD's to help me master the art of quilting. I've followed your instructions to the "T" and I think I'm finally getting the whole process. I bought another set of DVD's, when I didn't think my order went through with you, and I'm so disappointed with them. The two ladies seems confused and are giving totally different information from what I've gleaned in watching quilting shows on TV. They remind me of ME quilting, turning the fabric first one way and then the other and not seeming to know which end is up, literally. I just wanted to let you know how much help you're giving to me even though you're miles away. I love the "feel" of your video's as well, a homespun, bird in the background, what sounds like a dog slurping water, etc. It reminds me of being in a familiar home of a good friend, not an impersonal video teacher. I think everyone who's on the fence about ordering should do so. What I learned is well worth the price and in installments no less, what could be better. Roberta Kelly Susan Moore, deaf - video "Robin's Nest" is WOW!!!!!

What’s the cost to put Me on Your Quilting Team?
By now you can see how valuable "Machine Quilt Your Jelly Roll Quilt" is for making any quilt - whether you use jelly rolls, Bali Pops, or yardage off the bolt, and you may be wondering about the cost of this amazing resource.
Well, put it this way.
If you hired me to consult with you to cover all of the points of using jelly rolls in your quilt, it would probably take 7-10 hours. And that's if I boil it all down and cover only the critical points, and not all of the little details. Currently folks are paying me $198 per hour for consulting, that would set you back about $1,980 – and that doesn’t count travel or telephone expenses. Plus at the end of that time, your head would be spinning, your notes would be flying, you would just have pieces of paper to refer to, and maybe still not all of your questions would be answered.
When you invest in this package, you get the DVDs you can look at whenever you want, and as many times as you want, showing you every single detail of how to make this Jelly Roll Quilt.
Or you could spend $60-$70 for some quilting books, plus $20-$30 each for some books with tips about how to make a quilt using jelly rolls and how to machine quilt using your home sewing machine and then try to figure it all out yourself. But, then, we've already tried that, haven't we? And those books still didn't tell me what I needed to know - - - Plus some of the techniques I share in Machine Quilt Your Jelly Roll Quilt are ones I haven't even seen in books, let alone all in one place.
Remember, though, it’s taken me more than 29 years of making all different kinds of quilts, plus an investment of thousands of dollars to sort through all of the clutter of information and give you only the best. And I know you want to get to the heart of making quilts using jelly rolls and finishing your quilt with beautiful machine quilting, and bypass all of that torture and unnecessary expense.
Maybe you have already made a bunch of quilts using jelly rolls, and think you have seen everything already and can figure it out yourself. Maybe, but if you are anything like I am, every time I pick up a quilting book or magazine, I learn something new from just one little article or picture. Just imagine what you could learn from more than 2 hours and 50 minutes of live quilting on DVD plus all of the bonus reports and samples of my quilting design work.
Every quilter has unique shortcuts and techniques that she has developed over time. The big difference is that I am happy to share mine! (Not all quilters are.) And because I am sewing exactly the way I sew when the camera is off, you get every inside tip and technique I have. Plus, when I make a mistake (as all quilters do when they sew), you see how I fix it - preventing you from making the same mistake as you create your family heirloom quilt. Or maybe helping you solve the mistake you make as you stitch your quilt.
Your Time is Worth Something, isn't it?
Often I get invited to attend live training, and it doesn't fit into my time schedule, or I know that there is so much information that it will be almost impossible to take adequate notes during the training.
Plus I know that when I am taking notes, I miss some of the new information that is being delivered - no matter how slow the teacher goes.
And, you can look back at each and every clip in the video whenever you want to and how ever many times you need to – without feeling stupid or embarrassed for reviewing it eleven times. (You can even watch in your jammies or sweats or while the kids or grandkids [or hubbie] are taking a nap!)
Just think of how many hours you would spend pawing through books looking at instructions about how to make a quilt using jelly rolls or Bali Pops, reading them and then trying to figure out exactly what they are telling you, so you can try it yourself.
If you are anything like I am, once you have read everything and think you know what you are supposed to do, there are still some surprises along the way. But, when you watch someone actually do something, each step becomes clear and the surprise is only at the end when it all works out the way it is supposed to.
Sometimes when we explore something new, we don't even know all of the questions to ask. As a result, we miss some valuable tips and techniques that would make our quilting easier and more fun.
And I will readily admit that often when I hear a quilter share a technique I'm either confused with the description or a little scared to try it - without seeing how to do it and how it will turn out.
"Machine Quilt Your Jelly Roll Quilt" walks you through everything, step-by-step, showing you exactly how to do each process from start to finish, so you can see how it works. Plus I tell you what to watch out for - what is critical and what can slide. That way, you know where to spend your time to make your quilt perfect.
In this economy, sometimes it's a little more difficult to justify investing in a quilting resource. Believe me, I am being a little more choosy about where I invest my hard earned money, too.
Before every purchase, I carefully consider what I am going to get to be sure that I am getting great value for my investment and that any resource will give me the information and skills I need for years to come.
I can assure you that I thought about this as I put the information together for "Machine Quilt Your Jelly Roll Quilt." I wanted to create a resource that you can rely on for making any quilt in your future. So, you get techniques that will work not only on a jelly roll quilt, but on every other quilt you choose to make.
In essence, you get great quilting information enabling you to design and make gorgeous family heirloom quilts AND you get the added information you need in order to use jelly rolls or Bali Pops to make this quilt.
The bottom line is that, using the resources in "Machine Quilt Your Jelly Roll Quilt," you will be able to:
Your family and friends deserve the best quilts you can make, and using the techniques in "Machine Quilt Your Jelly Roll Quilt" you will know the right techniques for making perfect quilts - from jelly rolls or using fabric bought off of a bolt.
This video information is amazing, and you will learn tons from just watching it. But, as I developed the information to share, I realized that there were other resources that you would benefit from - whether you are a beginner quilter or a quilter with more experience.
And to make it an even easier decision, we are including a couple of extra goodies:

With these 10 fully Illustrated Lessons, you can follow along as the video lessons progress. Each lesson has full-color illustrations taken from the video, so you can easily keep track and read while you watch the video, or print just the pages you want.

Bonus Gift #2 – Value $25.00
Quilt Block Patterns for
Light and Shadow and Does Double Duty Quilt Blocks
|
| Light and Shadows quilt block and Does Double Duty quilt block |
As I was looking for easy-to-sew quilt block patterns that would take full advantage of the strips in jelly rolls, I narrowed it down to two quilt blocks - Light and Shadows and Does Double Duty.
Using the EQ6 quilt design software, I tested each out to see how I might like a quilt using the colors in my jelly roll in each of these designs.
Evenutally I settled in on the block on top - Light and Shadows. But, you might choose the Does Double Duty block, or even a different block entirely.
To get you started, if you choose either one of these blocks, you will have the full-size pattern templates, rotary cutting instructions and colored picture of the blocks.
Some quilters like to use their rotary cutter and ruler to cut all strips and patches, but if you are a quilter who loves to have the accuracy of templates, they are included for you to print and use. Print as many as you need - after all, we know how rotary cutters have a habit of trimming slivers away from the edges of templates, and you want your cut fabric to be perfect.
This Gift alone is a $25.00 value and it’s yours free with your order of Machine Quilt Your Jelly Roll Quilt.
Bonus Gift #3 – Value $39.95
Quilting Design Patterns
![]() |
| Traditional quilting design used in this jelly roll quilt |
Once your quilt is finished, you will want to quilt it - seems pretty obvious! But what design should you use? Most quilters know that is the tricky part.
We've taken some of the guesswork out by including 7 alternative quilting designs. These are the designs I considered as I made my jelly roll quilt.
Watch the video to learn why I chose the design I used, but keep your options open - you may use a different design, and now you will have the full size designs to use.
These are very old, traditional quilting designs, out of copyright protection - so feel free to use them as is or modify them so the quilting desing is perfect for your quilt.
These quilting designs came from 3 different books that I have treasured for years. And I spent hours turning the pages as I considered how each possible design would look on this quilt. This Gift alone is a $39.95 value and it’s yours free with your order of Machine Quilt Your Jelly Roll Quilt.
Bonus Gift #4 – Value $27.97
Hide-in-the-Binding Hanging Sleeve Video
This year members of TheQuiltingCoach.com receive a monthly DVD demonstrating a valuable quilting technique that will make your quilting more fun and easier.
While a hanging sleeve is a rather mundane part of a quilt, it is necessary for a wall hanging. And why not make a hanging sleeve hide on the back of your quilt.
This jelly roll quilt includes instructions for adding a hanging sleeve to the back of your quilt once the quilt is finished.
However, in this alternative, you can include your hanging sleeve as a part of your binding.
I've been doing this for years, and was pleased when a professional quilter was amazed by the technique and wondered why she hadn't thought of it.
With this bonus gift, you will have two different methods for attaching a hanging sleeve to your quilt - choose the one you like the best!
This Gift alone is a $27.97 value if you were to purchase the video separately and it’s yours free with your order of Machine Quilt Your Jelly Roll Quilt. Once you see this technique, you'll agree that the information is PRICELESS!
Bonus Gift #5 – Value $39.95
Fill-in-the-Blank Fabric Calculations
Figuring out how many strips you need for your quilt is tricky, even with a fabric calculator. Using this fill-in-the-blank fabric calculator, you can tell how many strips you need for any quilt - whether it's a jelly roll quilt or a quilt using fabric from the bolt.
This is so easy a 3rd grader could do it - after all, we already know about how smart 5th graders are!
Just follow the example and fill in the blanks, you'll know how many strips for any of your quilting projects. No fooling around with special calculators, trying to figure out how to enter the numbers so you can see how much fabric to buy. Besides, even the special calculators don't tell you how many strips you need!
Do this first, and you will have the right amount of fabric for your quilt and not run back and forth to the fabric shop, hoping they still have the fabric you need.
This Gift alone is a $39.95 value and it’s yours free with your order of Machine Quilt Your Jelly Roll Quilt.
Bonus Gift #6 – Value $25.00
Project Files from EQ6
![]() |
| EQ6 project files for the Jelly Roll Quilt |
We all know that it's easier to start with something rather than create from scratch.
So, to make your quilting easier, this package includes the EQ6 project files for the Light and Shadows quilt block as well as the Does Double Duty quilt block.
Customize your design with the colors you plan to use. Choose the exact size of the blocks and quilt you plan to make, and then print the templates, rotary cutting layouts and fabric requirements.
Just think, these quilt blocks are easy to make for any quilt, why limit yourself to Jelly Roll projects? Use these blocks for a baby quilt using pastel fabric, or create a youth quilt using some other fun fabric, like a sport-theme design, wilderness design, or other favorite of the lucky person who will receive your quilt.
This Gift alone is a $25.00 value and it’s yours free with your order of Machine Quilt Your Jelly Roll Quilt. Although who really knows the value of these files, since nobody else on the planet is sharing their files!

This is an amazing value when you figure that other quilting DVDs are being sold for $19.95 each - and those are just 60 minute videos, or 33.25 cents per minute. This set includes 5 DVDs or 171 minutes of valuable quilting instruction. If I were to charge you the same rate per minute, that would add up to $56.86 for this DVD set!
All of these goodies add up to a total value of $384.67, and our low, www.How-to-Quilt.com price of $97 saves you an amazing $287.67, a full 74.78% of the retail price – SAVED! It's like giving all of this fabulous information away!
And that’s if you could find this valuable information elsewhere.
I don't if you've looked at any books about making Jelly Roll quilts, but they are like many other books about how to make quilts. Each section has great information, but they are separate sections - one about fabric, one about the tools you need, and maybe one about how to cut the fabric.
Then when it comes to the quilts, most books have a bunch of different patterns (which is nice) but the diagrams they use to show how to put the blocks and quilts together are just color blobs, leaving you to rely on your vast knowledge of quilting and great imagination to know which is the right side vs. the wrong side of the fabric. Plus, they assume you already know how to sew the patches together.
Many quilters believe it is easier to learn quilting techniques by walking from start to finish while someone holds their hand and shows them all the secret techniques that make construction of the quilt easier and more fun. Things that are left out of the books - because they think we already know it!
Plus, it's a BOOK, and all you can do is turn the pages. Do you think you can email a question to the author and expect an answer? Good luck with that!
Here at www.How-to-Quilt.com we believe in helping individual quilters solve their quilting dilemmas, so when you have a question - whether it is about a quilting technique or your order - we are here to help. I can't even tell you how many times I've emailed the author of a book with no response - that is assuming I can even find her email address.
And, as always, this purchase comes with our www.How-to-Quilt.com No Hassles, No Weasel Clauses Money Back Guarantee.
