From: Penny Halgren
Dear Friend,
Have you ever gone on a trip and sent a
postcard to someone “back home?”
When my mom travels, she takes her address book
and stamps so she is ready to send her family and friends at least
one postcard from each spot she visits.
Then when she gets home, she checks with us to see
whether we got the postcard, when it arrived, and whether we noticed
something special about the card.
Her postcards are always pretty cool. I’ve
been with her when she buys them. Sometimes it drives me nuts
waiting for her to make her selections. It seems like it takes
hours for her to find the perfect postcard. In the end, though,
it’s worth it. She’s pleased, and the person
who receives the card is thrilled because it’s
so perfect.
I admit that I have quite a postcard collection
now. There’s one from Portugal with my
favorite rooster on it, and I have one of the arch in St.
Louis when my parents and kids were on a trip up the
Mississippi on the steamboat.
After my son, Bubba, went to his first football
game at the University of Michigan, he sent a
postcard with an aerial view of the “Big House.” (That's
the football stadium in Ann Arbor.) And there’s the very
funny picture postcard of 2 armadillos walking
down the center line of a road in Texas with a caption “Texas
Speed Bumps” that my daughter, Stephanie, sent shortly after
she moved to Houston.
Bubba sent me a ‘thank you’
postcard when he got the braces off of his teeth. And
an all-time favorite, for many reasons, is a postcard that Stephanie
designed during a training session she was suffering
through. The training had nothing to do with art or making postcards;
her message said something about the trainers being boring.
Hmmmm.
Postcards Record History
One day, I opened up a box and found a stack of
postcards that my grandmother had saved. The
collection included photo postcards from the early 1920s –
pictures of towns in California with old cars driving
on dirt streets. (Though I imagine the cars were new when
the postcards were made.) There were colored drawings of trains
traveling across the country. And pictures of cheerleaders.
(I’m still trying to figure that one out!)
My dad gave me his collection of postcards. Since
he traveled a lot as a chemist serving the airline industry, his
postcards included pictures of airplanes, hotels and an
occasional night club, spanning the globe.
All of them are pieces of history – either
family history or just plain history. The collection
of postcards from my family chronicles travels, holidays, and
“just to say hi!” messages. The airplanes and hotels
reveal much about my dad’s career – his professional
travels and the companies he worked with. The cards from my kids
gave me a youthful eye of the world.
These postcards are a variety of sizes. Most of
them are 4” by 6,” yet there’s
the occasional 6” by 9” card. And,
it's not unusual to find some that are 3" by 5."
Most of my postcards have a shiny surface, although some
of the postcards from my grandmother had a dull finish.
Even with that variety of postcards, I have never
received a fabric postcard. I have a picture of a quilt
on a postcard. Maybe 2 or 3 pictures of quilts. But no actual
fabric postcard.
Until relatively recently, the possibility hadn’t even
occurred to me.
One day last year, I was cruising around the internet,
looking for something new and interesting in the quilting world, when I found a reference
to a fabric postcard exchange. That sounded fun, so I checked
it out further.
The quilters in this particular fabric postcard
exchange were making these tiny quilts based on a defined theme.
They submitted pictures of their postcards which were then posted
online so everybody could see their artwork.
I followed some other links and found that quilters
were looking for others around the world to send their fabric
postcards to in hopes of getting one in return. Now, that would
be fun – make a postcard showing a koala in our San Diego zoo,
mail the card to a quilter in Sydney, Australia.
Well, maybe not that exactly. But getting a fabric postcard made
by a quilter in Australia sounded like great fun.
There were even contests for fabric postcards.
Fabric postcards are one of the hottest
little quilting items around. In addition to all of the
activity on the web, each month, another quilting magazine “discovers”
fabric postcards. And books have been written about fabric postcards.
It seems that everyone loves fabric postcards. And Why Not?
They are:
Yes, a tiny little quilting treasure can be a giant
record of your family history. Just imagine sending a fabric greeting
with your friend's favorite quilt block pattern in miniature.
Or send a photo of your new baby on a fabric
postcard. Spend the week in the hunting lodge stitching fabric
postcards to send home, instead of freezing your buns off shooting
ducks. (Your hunting buddies will really appreciate not hearing you
whine about the cold and mud!)
So, Where's the Pattern?
You would think that with all of that activity, someone
would have created a pattern with clear instructions showing exactly
how to make a fabric postcard. But, I could not find one.
I found the usual – “Copy my design, add
your own embellishments” or “Here’s a template,
now go have fun” or, well, just nothing but a picture. You’re
supposed to figure it out yourself.
Well, as a beginning quilter, that could be a
pretty difficult task.
At least it would have been for me when I
was learning how to make a quilt. I would not have even
considered making any kind of a quilt – even if it was only
a 4” by 6” quilt – without some kind of pattern
with instructions. And the more detailed the instructions, the more
I liked it.
So, I decided to create a Step-by-Step Guide
for Making a Fabric Postcard – A Resource with the
beginning quilter in mind. Something that would explain and show
with photographs EXACTLY what to do, when to do it, and what your
tiny quilt would look like.
But what should the design be?
I was looking for a new design, since I had already designed a photo transfer fabric postcard.
I scoured the internet, magazines and several books,
and decided that the perfect fabric postcard design for a patchwork
quilter to make would include a pieced heart. Hearts
seem to represent the love that quilters stitch into their projects,
and communicates that love to everyone around.
Because most beginner quilters are looking for something
that is patchwork (and not appliqué), uses
straight sewing (and not curves), and will be finished
without frustration or massive expense, I knew that this
heart would need to be easy to sew, and not include the curves that
some heart designs have.
And the Planning Begins
So, I rounded up the crayons and graph paper and began
to draw squares, triangles and rectangles. All of the shapes
that are easy for beginning quilters to cut and sew.
I spent hours drawing and playing, and ended up with
a fun little heart that is really easy to put together.
Next stop was the fabric stash. Because this fabric
postcard is small (approximately 7” wide by 5” high),
it doesn’t take much fabric, and I could use scraps.
Red and white, lavender, purple and a splash of pink popped out
of the box. Colors perfect for men, women, boys and girls.
Fabric chosen, crayon drawing on the cutting table,
iron hot, sewing machine warmed up, rotary cutter blade sharp,
ruler ready, cutting mat clean, and I was ready to go. Just one
or two more things. A pad of paper to take notes as I made the
fabric postcard, and a camera to record each step of the way.
My pain is your gain. This resource tells
you exactly how to make a fabric postcard in a heartbeat.
Not to scare you, but days later, the Pieced Heart
postcard was done! It took me hours and days, but that included
writing down every cut I made with scissors and rotary cutter,
the length and size of every piece of fabric required, notes about
each sewing step, taking pictures of each and every step, and
transferring the digital pictures to the computer when the camera
was full.
Once the fabric postcard was complete, I set about
formatting each one of the 130 pictures that are
jam-packed into this fantastic 62 page resource.
Believe me, I took many more pictures than that, and some of them
were taken 2 or 3 times to get just the right angle to show you
exactly what to do in each step, and how the project should look
at that point.
After all of the pictures were sized and ready,
I began writing. At first I thought “This will be a piece
of cake.” Since I had already written the popular Step-by-Step
Guide to make a Photo Fabric Postcard, I figured I could just
delete the stuff that wasn’t in this new project, and add
the stuff that is in this quilt fabric postcard.
Boy was I wrong!
Yes, there were a few paragraphs I could use. Let’s
see, there is the set of paragraphs about hand quilting,
some about pre-washing your fabrics, and general
information about machine quilting. That was about
it.
New to this resource is detailed, Step-by-Step
information, with 130 full color photographs of instructions
that include how to:
- Cut the fabric needed for this fun
little postcard – beginning on page 6, you get instructions
for using your rotary cutter and then pages 10 and 11
give you a list of exactly how much fabric of each color
to cut
- Strip piece a checkerboard pattern
– you get specific information for speed sewing
beginning on page 15, including how to make sure you are
sewing an accurate ¼” seam allowance
- Create a border with diamonds –
the easy way! No bias stitching little diamond shapes;
speed cutting and sewing without stretching the fabric;
page 26 is where this fun begins
- Sew two different sizes of half-square triangles
– using shortcuts and template free, starting on
page 20
- Add border strips with cornerstones
(squares in the corners of the border) – find out
on page 33 how to quickly and easily add interest to your
borders (also a good technique if you run out of fabric
– yes, I speak from experience)
- Make binding using a bias tape maker
– easier than the fold, press, cut, fold, press,
cut method, you’ll see every step beginning on page
53
- And much, much more

Here's What a Beginning Quilter
in Romania has to Say:
| I am a beginner quilter and I bought "Quilted
cards" from you, enjoying it
completely. Though simple, the book is extremely well
written and clear, and it makes you want to create your own cards.
Which I did and I sent them to two of my friends who live
in America now.
They have just received them and liked them a lot. This
encourages me to
continue next year with maybe more sophisticated projects.

"That's nice," you say, "But What do Other Quilters Say?"
Hundreds, maybe thousands, of quilters are using my Step-by-Step
guides for making quilts because they are so easy to follow, and
make your quilting adventure fun. Here’s what some of these
folks have to say about our Step-by-Step Quilting Guides:

I am back again and you are teaching me slow
and easy. It will not be long before I will have all of your
teaching tools. I thank you for taking your knowledge and
transfer using easy terms and show what you are talking
about. I am one it is much easier when it is show
and tell.

Your book is great. I looked at it cover
to cover before I put it down. Great and easy instructions.
It was nice talking to you the other day. I've made a friend
in California :)
Have a good day.

I have just finished my first 2 quilts and
used your "How to Bind a Quilt" instructions and
I found the information easy to follow and very helpful. The
binding looked good and the people I made the quilts
for were as pleased as punch to receive them. In
fact they are showing them to every one in the (rather large)
complex of units that they live in.
Thank you for putting the information on your website.

"Thank you Penny, for
responding back to me!
I was able to download the file and open it late yesterday.
I printed off the book and have all ready read through most
of it.
I'm looking forward to starting my quilt.
I have hand quilted before with some little projects such
as pillows and wall hangings but my ultimate goal is to complete
a full size quilt!!!
And I think with your book that goal will be met! Thank you
again!"

Tell Me, "Why Do I need This
Guide?"
You might think – "Penny, I don’t need your
guide. This is a tiny little projec, and I can figure it out myself.”
And maybe you can. I did. But, then, I’ve been making quilts
for more than 24 years – big ones, little ones, original designs and following
patterns, traditional patchwork, three-dimensional, curved pieces – all the fancy stuff.
Even with all of that experience, while figuring out
how to make a fabric postcard, I wasted fabric, time and energy
since I had to:
- Figure out exactly what fabric to cut
and how much
- Figure out how the border diamond pattern is
made simply and easily
- Figure out how to make the binding and sew it on so the
corners are square
- Figure out what size is accepted by the US post
office for mailing as a fabric postcard
- Solve the mystery of how to make the fabric postcard
stiff enough to mail, but soft enough to
still feel like a miniature quilt
|
That’s a lot of figuring and solving, you could
save yourself by simply taking a couple of minutes to download
this great quilting resource and have the answers laid out right
in front of you. Even if you don’t want to read the instructions,
you can follow the pictures and see exactly what to do.
Here Are Just a Few
Ideas for Fabric Postcards
- Send a fabric postcard thank you
for a gift with a picture of you using the present.
- Send a fabric postcard birthday
greeting
- Send a fabric postcard memory with
a favorite picture of your friend.
- Welcome a baby with a favorite quilt
block on a fabric postcard.
- In short, your family and friends
will love to receive a fabric postcard any day of the year
- whether there's a special occasion or not.
|
And your success is guaranteed

So, what’s the deal?
Your copy of “Pieced Heart Fabric Postcard” is ready
for you to claim – either through an electronic download or in printed
version.
Just think, for just pennies a day, you will have
the secret recipe to thousands of greetings that your friends
and family will remember forever. And these can be created
for any occasion and sent throughout the year.
How can you put a price on the key to creating quilting
memories?
By the page? Well, the Pieced Heart Fabric Postcard Step-by-Step
Guide has 62 pages. At $1.00 per page, that would be $62.00.
By the picture? The Pieced Heart Fabric Postcard Step-by-Step Guide
has 130 pictures. At $1.00 per photograph, that would be $130.00.
By the number of hours spent creating this valuable quilting resource?
I spent more than 80 hours designing and making the fabric postcard,
taking the pictures and writing the book. Then another 20 hours
formatting and getting it ready for printing and downloading. I'm
sure you will agree that my time is worth more than $1.00 per hour.
But even if it were, that would be $100.00.
By the cost of a class you would take to learn how to make this
fabric postcard? Add the cost of the workshop plus the value of
your time at $15.00 per hour (which is ridiculously low!), and you
get $125.00, plus the aggravation of getting your
stuff together to attend the class. And, where have you ever seen
a class about how to make this fabric postcard?
By the cost of all of the books, magazines and articles written about fabric
postcards? There have been at least 5 books written about fabric postcards.
Each one sells between $16.95 and $24.95, averaging $20.85. To buy
just the books would cost $104.25. Then add the magazines to that,
and you would have around $110.00
And, you still wouldn't have step-by-step instructions. You would
have a jumbled mess of books and articles that
would need to be organized before you could start.
Now You Will Discover Why This Deal is Too Good to Pass Up
All the quilting secrets you need are revealed
in the valuable resource “Pieced Heart Fabric Postcard.” You will
be taken by the hand and walked through each and every step
in making a beautiful fabric postcard that someone will treasure
forever. Maybe even carry with them. Two generations from
now, someone will look at that well-loved fabric postcard,
and imagine YOU, the talented quilter who created
it!
In addition to this wonderful resource, you will also receive the

This information also could be gathered for free – when you find it!
It took me an hour to find the basic regulation and research all
of the different provisions to make sure that I had all the rules
covered. Then I visited my local post office with the Pieced Heart
Fabric Postcard, waited in the usual big, long line, and checked with
the postal authorities. That may sound easy, but the postal clerk I
talked to had to look it up, consult with her co-workers, and talk to
her boss. Hey, my time and aggravation is worth something.
This is a $15.77 value and is included for FREE with
your order of Pieced Heart Fabric Postcard.
FREE BONUS GIFT #6

postcard is the right size to qualify for the postcard postage rate.
Or you will see that your Pieced Heart Fabric Postcard must carry
the first class postage rate. I'm not going to kid you, this is
a very simple template, and by itself probably worth the full $5.75,
and not a penny more. For your Pieced Heart Fabric Postcard project,
however, this could be priceless! You will have
confidence when you deliver your fabric postcards to the Post Office
that they meet the Postal Standard.
This is a $5.75 value and is included for FREE with
your order of Pieced Heart Fabric Postcard.
