From: Penny Halgren

Greetings Quilter,

Wouldn't it be nice if you could find a quilt pattern that included the exact fabric you wanted to use in the size you wanted to make and then gave you the fabric requirements for each of the fabrics?

There are thousands of quilt blocks out there, and every one of them can be made in any size you want to make, and with any fabric placed in any one of the patches.

And each time you change the placement of the fabrics in a patch, you change the design of the quilt. It's actually quite amazing, and fun!

Years ago, I took a workshop from Arlene Stamper, a San Diego quilter, and the project was to take one block pattern and simply change the colors in the patches in each block to see how different each block looked.

My family had watched me make several quilts, and they had even asked me to make specific quilts - usually for them. A heart quilt for quilting daughter, Stephanie, a fishbowl quilt for engineer son, Bubba.

Generally the quilts came out looking pretty nice. The kids picked the fabric as well as the design. Sometimes it was a soft pastel, and other times we used bold prints. But usually it was one person's idea in a quilt. And most of the time it was a purchased pattern, with fabric requirements and templates included.

For this workshop I decided to do somethng different.

The very few times I had created my own quilt design, I drew pencil outlines of the blocks. Once the outlines were done, I went to the copy store and made dozens of copies, went home, cut out all the little paper blocks, glued them onto a bigger piece of paper in what I thought would be the arrangement of the blocks on the quilt.

Then there was the return trip to the copy store so I could make multiple copies of the layout. Then back home, I took out the colored pencils or crayons, and began coloring different designs. That was the fun part - but still just the beginning.

Sometimes when I couldn't decide which block to use, I drew a bunch of different blocks, took them to the copy store, made copies, brought them home, colored them on the big sheet of paper, and then cut out the ones I liked. From there, I played with the arrangement on a bigger piece of paper.

If I wanted several blocks colored the same, I colored a bunch of blocks the same and then spread them out on the bigger sheet.

designing a quilt

The almost-final selection of colored paper blocks each member of my family made for the quilt in Arlene's class.

Hours and even days later, once I was finished playing, and I had decided on a color design, I glued the little paper blocks onto the bigger sheet, and I had my quilt design.

For Arlene's class, I decided to give each person in my family a blank grid of the block (a bunch of them, really), a handful of crayons, and ask them to color the patches the way they wanted.

That part alone took a week. They had fun creating different color schemes, and even more fun choosing the design they liked best of the ones they colored.

The next step was choosing the fabric. Because each block was so different and we didn't need much of any one fabric, we went fabric shopping in my stash. The kids were young, and had a great time matching fabrics with the colors they had determined would be in each patch. (You can see the piles of fabric behind the book and blocks in the picture on the right.)

Cutting, stitching, basting, hand quilting, binding and finishing. In a month or two, the class was complete; the quilt took a little longer to finish.

Although eclectic in its design, I always thought it was a nice looking quilt; it hung on the wall for years, and nobody complained about it.

Years Later, the Secret . . .

family quilt - bachelors puzzle block
The family quilt - each person colored a
block creating his or her design.

A few years ago, when quilting daughter, Stephanie, was home and we were talking about color combinations in quilts, she remarked that she thought my fabric and color choices were "interesting." Somehow I got the impression that she didn't mean it in a complimentary way.

"Look at that quilt," she said, pointing to the family quilt. "There's only one block in that whole quilt where the fabrics really go together. The rest of them are just weird looking." Ouch!

Of course, she was pointing to "her" block as the one that looked good.

And she is probably right. Her block is the pink and lavender block in the upper right corner. The other blocks have blue, yellow, orange, green, gold, red - quite a collection of colors.

The thing is that when we started looking around at some of the other quilts where I had chosen the colors without any family assistance, I had to admit that they were unusual. Not ugly (in my opinion anyway), just different.

Part of the reason is that when I designed a quilt, I generally used crayons or colored pencils to try out color schemes. And on paper with crayons, even Stephanie would agree, that the color combinations work. It's just when I started choosing the fabric that the "go together" design fell apart, and rather than going back to the beginning, I just sewed the quilt together.

(That was before I started cutting little samples of fabric and placing them next to each other on the paper design.)

Then there is the issue of having enough fabric to finish the quilt. I can't even tell you how many times I have run out of fabric because I miscalculated.

Especially when there are a bunch of different fabrics in the quilt. I usually just guess and hope. I try to buy extra fabric, but many times I either underestimate or end up using the fabric in a place that I hadn't thought I would use it and ultimately run short.

And then there are the times when I have yards of extra fabric because I miscalculated in the other direction, and ended up needing less than I thought.

Designing a Quilt is So Much Easier with Mouse Clicks
and Printer Buttons

A few years ago, after much study and consideration, I invested in the EQ5 Quilt Design software. And I'm happy to say that it has been worth every hard-earned penny I invested.

Creating patterns for both blocks and quilts is now easy and quick. Using this software, I can choose the fabric I will use in my quilt, so I can see exactly what it will look like in the finished quilt.

And in just a fraction of a second, I can change a fabric in a patch, block, or the whole quilt - and see just what it will look like. No erasers, no trips to the copy shop. No glue. No trash. Just experiments on a computer screen.

Right in the software there pictures of fabric that is available in quilt shops. And I can scan in the fabric I plan to use in the quilt so I get to see a picture of what the actual quilt will look like as I design it.

And if I want, I can invite a daughter or son to stand over my shoulder and watch.

Oh, I'll readily admit that there was a learning curve. But now I can whip out a block or quilt pattern in just a few minutes, including getting the fabric requirements.

As soon as it was available, I upgraded to the EQ6 software. With EQ6, there were even more block patterns included in the software - giving you ideas for quilts and thousands of traditional quilt block patterns that were already drafted and included suggested colors for the blocks.

EQ6 has hundreds of quilt designs ready to simply put blocks into, making it even easier to design a quilt. And thousands of actual quilting fabrics to use as each block or quilt was designed. Plus, EQ6 included more than 4,000 different thread colors.

And thousands of quilters have enjoyed using EQ6 for a few years now since it makes designing a quilt really easy. And within seconds you know exactly how much fabric you need for any quilt you want to make.

Plus, one of the things I like best is that you can change the size of the quilt block without re-drawing the block. You simply change the size of the block before you print the templates or rotary cutting instructions, and the software automatically makes the changes, and your patterns are printed in exactly the size you want!

And Now They are Giving Us Even More

Leave it to quilters - - -

This quilt design software is used by thousands of quilters - professional and quilters like us, using it just for quilts we make.

And the software is designed by quilters who are always looking for ways to make it easier and better.

So, it wasn't too surprising that they would find even more things for the software to do.
