Machine Quilting and July Free Quilt Block Patterns

Dear Friend,

Last night's call with Paula Rostkowski was jam packed with information about longarm machine quilting. Paula is a professional longarm machine quilter who does custom quilting - not just the overall quilting design that you might find on a bed spread you got at WalMart.

Paula also talked about setting up quilts for quilting on your home sewing machine as well as the questions to ask a professional longarm machine quilter should we choose to have someone else finish our quilt.

You can read about the call below and order a CD recording of the Conversation to hear everything that was said.

Our 5th Annual How to Quilt Survey is under way, and if you haven't already, now is the time to give us your feedback.

It takes a few minutes and as a special thanks, you will get 5 free quilt block patterns to download.

We are also asking for ideas for Eavesdrop on a Telephone Conversation guests and quilts you want to learn to make.

Thanks to the thousands of quilters who have been with me for several years! It's fun to see that the experience level of the How-to-Quilt.com newsletter subscribers has gone from almost all Beginners, to now more than half consider themselves to be Intermediate Quilters.

We will continue to provide excellent, in-depth information for Beginning Quilters, and will expand our horizons to include for challenging information for our more experienced quilters.

Your input in the survey will guide us to provide the information you want and need to make your quilting easier and more fun.

And now - the News!

Happy Quilting!

Tips for Fabulous Free Motion Machine Quilting

In addition to straight line quilting, there are several other methods for machine quilting your quilt, including free motion quilting.

In free motion quilting, you sew a continuous design on your quilt without having to start and stop. Not only can this type of quilting create a beautiful design, but it is also somewhat easier to accomplish since it requires few starts and stops.

With a few adjustments on your home sewing machine, machine quilting becomes relatively easy. Here are a few tips:

  • lower the feed dogs on your machine
  • use a darning foot for free motion quilting. A walking foot is great for straight machine quilting stitches
  • mark the quilting design on your quilt just as you would if you were hand quilting
  • baste the layers of your quilt together. The easiest methods are pins or spray basting
  • begin stitching by taking a few stitches and then pulling the bobbin thread up to the top of the quilt
  • once your stitches are secure, tie a knot in the threads where your quilting started, and hide the knot inside your quilt
  • use both hands to guide your quilt under the machine needle. Wearing special machine quilting gloves helps a lot with this
  • check your stitches to be sure that the tension on your machine is set correctly
  • and the biggest help - PRACTICE! Set up practice "quilt sandwiches" - 3 layers (top fabric, batting and backing) about 18 inches square and practice the design you will quilt on your quilt. It's amazing how much a few minutes of practice will improve your machine quilting.

Eavesdrop on a Telephone Conversation - Paula Rostkowski

paula rostkowski

Paula Rostkowski is a professional longarm quilter.

As a hand quilter and teacher of hand quilting for many years, she approaches machine quilting the same way and enjoys enhancing the design of each quilt top.

She always looks forward to the challenge of making a quilt look distinctive and unique.

Almost all of her machine quilting is freehand. She takes great pride in the quality of her work and treats every quilt as if it were her own.

Paula will happily work within a budget, using a simple amount of custom quilting for a small budget, all the way to an abundance of beautiful designs that are Quilt Show quality.

Paula joined us on June 28 and shared her secrets for beautiful longarm machine quilting, including:

  • how to "load the quilt" for quilting
  • how to choose the right batting for the quilt
  • all about thread tension
  • how to choose a quilting design

She also help us understand how to choose a professional longarm quilter to quilt a quilt we want. She gave us an idea about questions to ask before we leave our quilt, what types of services professional machine quilters provide and how to work within a budget, and much more.

Postcard Quilts for the Troops

Birthday Roundup Next - Deadline August 10!

birthday cake fabric postcard

Penny's Postcard Posse has sent more than 15,000 fabric postcards to our troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and the hospital in Germany.

As quilters, we know what those postcards mean to the men and women who receive them. Some who get them receive no other mail from home. And for all of them, it's a reminder of the wonderful freedoms they are fighting for and the comforts they will enjoy when they return home.

The Birthday Roundup is in full swing - the deadline is August 10

Diane had a great idea to send over a package of Birthday postcards that can be handed to soldiers the day of their birthday! What a great idea.

So, we've set up a deadline of August 10, and there is plenty of time to get some postcards made by then. She will send over a big box and the soldier "in charge" can hand them out as birthdays arrive. I will be adding birthday-themed postcard designs to www.QuiltBlockLibrary.com, so keep on checkin'

To make the Birthday Roundup deadline, get your cards to Diane by August 10.

Please send your cards to:

Diane is doing a fabulous job keeping the pictures updated, and if you have sent cards in, let your friends and family know that they can see pictures of them here: www.Fabric-Postcards.com
