From: Penny Halgren
Dear Friend,
It was 7:12pm last Saturday night in Los Angeles when my phone rang. That’s 9:12pm in Houston – still Saturday night.
Although I don’t like to answer my cell phone when I’m out with friends, when it’s one of my kids, I answer it. It’s not that they call so rarely, but Saturday night is a pretty unusual time for Stephanie to be calling me.
So I answered, and I’m glad I did. She was upset. m. mouse, the How-to-Quilt Siamese cat, was in trouble. He was throwing up and not able to walk without falling down.
It was Saturday night – her vet wasn’t exactly having Office Hours or making house calls. And there’s always the question “Do I wait until Monday, or spend the “Major Money” to find out what’s wrong. We decided that she should take him in.
Several hours later, she called back, and said that they wanted to run some tests. We all know what that means – Meaningful Major Money, not just Minor Major Money.
The significant factor was that his temperature was below normal – meaning (to me, anyway) that he was going into shock, and without knowing what was wrong, he would just pass out and be gone.
I couldn’t let that happen. This is an important kat. And quite a smart kat.
Years ago, while Pluto was getting all excited and upset about the arrival of p-nut, the boxer dog, m. mouse was scouting the best places to hide to avoid any encounter.
m. mouse almost got caught only once, no more. When p-nut was a tiny puppy, she was able to get through the cat door between the house and the garage. But, being a boxer, we all knew there would come a time when she wouldn’t fit.
I think m. mouse knew it, too.
One day, m. mouse was scurrying through the house, headed for the cat door. He blew through it and then stopped, and turned around only to see p-nut's nose on the garage side of the door, and the rest of her body in the house.
Although m. mouse is quite polite, I’m sure that inside he was howling at p-nut's miscalculation. And feeling just a little bit superior to the stuck dog.
From that day on, m. mouse knew he was safe in the garage, and when he wanted to come back into the house, all he had to do was stick his head into the house and figure out what p-nut was up to.
Back to last Saturday night. We decided to go ahead with the initial round of tests to see if they could figure out what the problem was.
The initial diagnosis indicated some pretty severe problems, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed, allowing him to live in good health. So, we decided to get him stabilized so they could see if some of the problems would resolve themselves as his system got back to normal.
Sure enough, most of the initial ailments disappeared, his strength came back, he started tipping over his water bowl, and purring when Stephanie came to visit, and now, all he is left with is diabetes.
We have our healthy kat, and a new awareness of a disease that affects all different kinds of animals.
When Stephanie called with the final diagnosis, we knew m. mouse was a true part of the family. My dad has diabetes that he’s been able to stabilize with his diet – avoiding insulin shots.
m. mouse isn’t quite as fortunate. His treatment includes 2 shots each day after he eats special food. Just try to get a cat to eat when you want him to, especially when it’s food he might not exactly prefer. It’s not like it’s Cat Fancy Gourmet Food in the microscopic cans that even finicky cats inhale.
Diabetes is a hideous disease that strikes children as well as adults, in any animal species. Frequently it is not diagnosed until the suferrer becomes very sick or almost dies.
Those who are diagnosed spend time and energy every day monitoring their diet and blood sugar. And, even with very careful monitoring and treatment, some lose their limbs, sight and function of various critical organs due to the effects of diabetes.
Diagnosis and treatment have improved, yet there is much more to do. Ultimately what enabled m. mouse to recover was the years of research conducted by support from the American Diabetes Association. Their ongoing research and education efforts will continue to keep him healthy and improve his quality of life.
For those reasons, Stephanie and I decided that we should do a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association. Not that we expect them to do research about diabetes in cats...but we believe that their research for cures and treatments for humans will also benefit cats and dogs.
In a searching their website, we discovered how much the American Diabetes Association loves quilters. One of their Gifts of Hope is a Family Quilt Plate with quite a touching message. I’m certain that they would love to have a sizable donation from quilters all around the world.
We could just ask for donations, and then forward them on to the American Diabetes Association, but we decided that you should get some great quilting information in return for your donation.
You can make a donation and get something fabulous in return...and it's perfect for any holiday or no holiday at all.
The first product m. mouse was involved with was the Photo Fabric Postcard. He was pleased to recommend the product because his brother, pluto’s, picture was in the book, on page 28.
The Photo Fabric Postcard is just the perfect thing for any holiday - or even no holiday at all. So, we’ve decided to donate 20% 40% of our gross sales to the American Diabetes Association. That’s BEFORE we subtract any of our costs!
Using this informative quilting resource, you will be able to surprise your family and friends with a fully customized, completely personalized quilt greeting – either a gift tag or a postcard in the mail.

You Get All the Details You Need for Success
Nothing is left out or left to your imagination. You see and read exactly what to do every Quick and Easy step of the way.
This guide assumes that you have little or no quilting experience. It uses terms that everyone understands – no secret quilting words that take a 1257 page glossary to figure out.
It reveals shortcuts and tips that take the mystery out of making this little quilt.
In short, this guide makes it fun and easy. Your whole holiday greeting card project (i.e., all of your greeting cards ready to mail) can be finished in a weekend, leaving you more time for the really entertaining stuff like shopping and baking and playing with the kids. Plus it gives you an excuse to make quilts (even if they are tiny).
Tell Me, "Why Do I need This Guide?"
You might think – ‘Penny, I don’t need your guide, I can figure this out myself.”
And maybe you can. I did. But, then, I’ve been making quilts for more than 25 years – big ones, little ones, original designs and following patterns, traditional patchwork, three-dimensional, curved pieces – all the fancy stuff.
Even with all of that experience, while figuring out how to make a Photo Fabric Postcard, I wasted fabric, time and energy since I had to determine:
- The post office regulations
- The size of the picture
- How to transfer the picture onto the fabric
- What fabric to cut
- How to make the pattern in the border come out even
- How to make the Fabric Postcard easier to write on
- How to finish the Quilt Postcard for mailing
Yup, you could spend a bunch of time figuring it all out, or you could spend a few dollars and have it all laid out for you. Even if you don’t want to read the instructions, you can follow the pictures and see exactly what to do.
Here’s How You Can Use Your Photo Fabric Postcard!
- Send a Photo Fabric Postcard thank you for a gift with a picture of you using the present.
-
Send a Photo Fabric Postcard birthday greeting
- Send a Photo Fabric Postcard memory with a favorite picture of your friend.
- Welcome a baby with a Photo Fabric Postcard.
-
In short, the Photo Fabric Postcard Guide is a resource for any day of the year, not just Christmas.

p.p.s. m. mouse here. i'm the siamese cat who works with penny and Stephanie at www.how-to-quilt.com. (pretty cool, huh?) thanks for helping out – i’m feeling better, but having diabetes is very inconvenient (to say the least! for both me and stephanie) – trips to the vet are becoming very unpleasant. they poke me and this funny red stuff comes out. then they poke me again and shove some clear liquid in. the good news is that after all that, i feel better.
P.P.P.S. m. mouse is doing well, although it is taking him
some time to fully recover from the trauma. We expect him
to be back 'on duty' at www.How-to-Quilt.com after Valentine's Day.
