| Secrets of Choosing Colors in Fabric Revealed - - |

Dear Quilting Friend,
Color presents one of the greatest challenges to quilters.
Whether it is choosing an overall color scheme or deciding which color to add to your fabric selection, many quilters feel lost or sometimes even overwhelmed.
As a matter of fact, many quilters are so lost that they rely on random quilters in their local fabric store for advice on choosing the colors for their quilts.
If you've never done it or seen it, you might laugh. But truly, it happens every day - sometimes more than once.
A quilter is standing next to a table piled with bolts of fabric - pondering.
Sometimes you can actually see the wheels inside her head spinning:
Just about that time, either a shopper in the store or one of the salesladies approaches with a gentle "Oh, that's a beautiful combination, what's the pattern of quilt?"
For many quilters, that question is like a lifeline because really it is an invitation to get involved in the selection of the fabrics for the quilt. And certainly someone who is interested in your quilt must have the experience required to offer some expert advice. Or so it seems.
That quilter may, in fact, be fully qualified to offer some advice. She may have been quilting for years. Or possibly she has taken classes about choosing colors in quilts or fabric dying. Or maybe she even has a college degree in art.
The problem is that color is personal. And the color combinations that other quilter loves (even if they are a certified expert) might be something that causes you to gasp with horror. Then what?
You don't really have to accept the advice. But if you take it and buy the fabric, you'll end up with a quilt you hate or fabric you never use. On the other hand, if you ignore the advice, she may be insulted or, worse, continue to "help" until you "get it right!"
Frustrated, some quilters just copy the colors in the quilt shown in a pattern. That works if you like the color combination of the pattern as it was designed and can find the right fabric in your quilt shop.
Often, though, you get a quilt pattern that uses patriotic colors when you really want a fun summer quilt using greens, oranges and maybe some yellows.
Other times, the pattern is a few years old and the fabrics are no longer available. So, even if you love the fabrics in the quilt, you can't get them. And, of course, the colors currently available in the stores aren't even close to what was used in the pattern.
(That's been my experience, anyway!)
And when you get to the point where you throw up yourr hands and cry "Uncle," you turn to two color quilts - how hard can that be? Well, it turns out, mistakes can be made there, too!
But Why Limit Yourself?
Making quilts is supposed to be fun as well as a way to express your creativity, not the creativity of the random lady in the quilt shop.
She’s not the quilter who will see the smile of delight as your finished heirloom quilt is unfolded by your grandson and his new wife.
And she isn't going to stand by your side to explain how that large scale print fabric got into the wall hanging that your family is going to look at every day - when your instinct was telling you that the pin dot would have been perfect.
And how creative is making only two color quilts, anyway - especially when there are all of those luscious colors of fabric displayed so beautifully on the fabric shop shelves?
The point is, that just like sewing the patches to make your blocks and learning how to layer and quilt your quilt, learning how to choose the colors for your quilts is part of the process that makes quilting so rewarding - and fun.
And it is really pretty easy - once you get on the right path!
If you are like most quilters, the natural reaction is to get a book that will teach you how to choose colors for your quilts.
But there is a ton of information out there. For example, a recent search on amazon.com for books about color in quilts nets about 1,182 results, which translates into a lot of opinions and “expert advice.”
When you read the titles, they all make it sound so easy. And as you look at the pretty pictures in the books, all of the quilts look wonderful with their perfect color combinations.
Yet when it comes time to actually choosing the fabric to use in a particular quilt, if you’re anything like I am, all of that reading and understanding just flies out the window. And all you’re left with is confusion.
It's just like learning how to sew those tricky little half-square triangles - if all you know is what it is supposed to look like when it's finished, how do you know each of the steps along the way?
And if the only thing you see is the finished quilt with the perfect color combination, how do you know where to begin with choosing colors, let alone which colors will create a quilt that will attract immediate attention and what you can do to tone it down a little.
While some people do have a natural instinct for selecting perfect colors, others (me included) don’t.
The good news is that color-choosing skills can be developed with a little knowledge and practice. Once you have those few skills, your color world will open up, and choosing colors for your quilts will be fun and easy. And, you don't even need to know all of those confusing color terms!
But color isn't the only thing that matters. The value of the various fabrics in your quilt are important, too.
Get those wrong (as I have done) and your quilt will look like a mud pie.

| Change the value of the fabrics in your quilt, and you change the look completely |
And, trust me, it's easy to do.
In the above example, when I chose the fabrics for the block on the left, I was focused on the bright green as a contrast to the pale blue. Yet when the block was completed, it looked like mush.
A simple change, making the green a dark green instead, and the design of the block stands out. A whole quilt using the blocks on the left would have been "boring!"
Lose the Frustration:
The Secrets of Choosing The Perfect Colors
in Your Quilt Can Be Yours
It's like so many techniques in quilting - all it takes is a secret or two to turn something difficult into something really easy. And, once mastered, you'll forget how difficult you thought it was!
For years, I struggled with choosing colors for my quilts.
Like most quilters, I relied on the patterns, spending hours trying to find the exact colors of fabric that were shown in the picture.
If that didn't work, I "asked a quilter."
Sometimes it worked, but often I got a quilt I was unhappy with.
Then one day I signed up for a workshop on Color and Value. And another workshop or two on dying fabric followed soon after.
These weren't one or two day workshops, either. The Color and Value workshop was 6 weeks long, with fairly involved homework in between the sessions.
And the Fabric Dying classes were 4 weeks each, and required a substantial investment in dyes, fabric and dying equipment. Not that I am complaining, because quilting daughter, Stephanie, and engineering son, Bubba, and I had hours of fun creating beautiful fabric.
The point is that I spent 14 weeks in 4-8 hour workshops and untold hours between the workshops, experimenting, testing and learning about colors in fabric and how it all worked (or sometimes didn't work).
And it didn't stop there!
Because fabrics are always changing, new colors are being introduced, and I enjoy creating quilts using a wide range of colors and styles, I have continued my quest for information that will make choosing colors for quilts even easier and more fun. And, of course, create quilts that are even more beautiful!
I have sought out experts, read books about color, and made hundreds of quilt blocks using various fabric combinations and then analyzed them to see what might make them have a slightly different look.
Along the way, I have created my own shortcut methods for seeing colors and values even more easily.
But you don't need to suffer through all of that time, wasted quilt blocks, and frustration, because I have gathered all of my very best resources and knowledge so you, too, can choose the perfect colors for your quilts - by having the critical skills in your quilting toolbox.
This resource is a combination of video, audio, and written material - with tons of examples and descriptions so you can see everything with your very own eyes and understand exactly how to choose colors and fabrics to create beautiful heirloom quilts - and even some fun quilts that your friends and family will love and enjoy (they may even wear them out)!
In this fabulous quilting resource, you will discover:
How understanding the RIGHT Color Wheel can be helpful when you choose the fabric for your quilt, streamlining your fabric selection! You probably thought there was only one color wheel. Not true - and when you get the color wheel that fabric manufacturers use, you will know exactly which colors to use in your quilt.
How to select and eliminate colors so your quilt has the feeling you want to portray. Sometimes you'll want to create a "summer" quilt with warm colors; and other times you may want to create a quilt that will be perfect for a trip to the mountains in fall. Using these resources, you'll be able to quickly narrow your choices down to exactly the colors that will create the mood you are looking for.
How to evaluate the fabric in your stash. Now this might sound boring, but using the resources you will have at your fingertips, you'll have fun discovering which fabrics will blend together and which ones can be used to add a sparkle to your quilt.
Where to look for color inspiration. Sometimes the perfect color combinations are right in front of you and all you need is a little hint about where to look and how to pluck the perfect colors out for your quilt.
How to create a color wheel using your fabric, and find the "holes" in your stash. Most quilters will look at this as the perfect time for a trip to the fabric store. After all, you need to have the right fabric choices for your quilts!
Why it's really OK to leave out the colors you don't like. If you have ever made a quilt that you find "hard to work on," it could be that the reason has nothing to do with the difficulty of sewing the patches or the actual design of the quilt. It might be the colors you are working with!
How to avoid having the patches in your blocks blend together. Your first thought might be - "ah, blending together might be good," but if the fabric blends together too much, you may end up with a quilt worthy of the trash because it just doesn't look right.
How to create a three dimensional look in your quilts. I spent months trying to find fabric that would create a three dimensional look, and didn't figure out why it didn't look right until I learned about shades and tints. You don't need to know the terms. You just need to know what to look for as you searched for the perfect fabrics.
Tap into millions of dollars of professional design knowledge. This resource can be found online or in most any town - big or small, whether you have a fabric shop or not. Companies pay millions of dollars to experts in design, and you can get their wisdom for FREE - and you don't even need to ask; just help yourself!

Secrets for Choosing Perfect Colors for Your Quilts is a combination of several different styles of resources. In includes:
The techniques you will see in these resources will help you choose the perfect colors for each and every quilt you make.
And, in just a short time, you will gain the confidence to walk into your fabric shop, knowing that you can choose the right colors for the quilt of your dreams.
"But How do I Know I Can Learn from You?" You Ask . . .
It's a fair question. And, frankly, I'd be asking the same one, because I want to be sure that any investment I make in my quilting instruction will be worth it.
So, what makes me different?
Years after I learned how to quilt, my daughter, Stephanie (who was 6 years old at the time), decided to take sewing classes from Barbara, a lady down the street. Barbara loved to make clothes, and wanted to share her craft with children, so about five of the neighborhood girls went to her house once a week and learned how to sew clothes.
The clothes were beautiful! And the girls had great fun. Barbara even staged fashion shows in her lovely back yard so these young ladies could show off their accomplishments to family and friends.
Then one day, Stephanie told Barbara that she wanted to learn how to make a quilt. Barbara panicked. She was an expert at making clothes, but knew nothing about how to sew a quilt. I knew that my daughter didn't want to learn how to make a quilt from me - she wanted Barbara to teach her.
So, Barbara and I hatched a plot.
During the day, when the girls were in school, I went to Barbara's house and taught her how to make a quilt. We chose an easy pattern, and with my step-by-step, easy-to-understand approach, Barbara learned how to make a quilt with skill and ease.
This is the same approach I use to teach about choosing colors for your quilts - one step at a time; easy instructions and explanations; tons of photographs of quilts and quilt blocks used as examples of both what to do and what to avoid.
Here is what quilters have to say about the live webinar about choosing colors for your quilts:
"Penny - Color has been a big problem for me and prints has been another. I think I can look at prints a little different now. Thanks so!" Becky I enjoyed Penny's webinar very much. This is the second one I have attended and was very enlightened with the presentation. I do have trouble asking questions and would like to know how to use the microphone to ask a question, by the time I try to type a question I have missed some of the presentation. I do not have any questions at this time but she did answered why some colors just don't look right. color family is a big key. Thanks so much for the WEBINAR! Thank you for the free webcast. I found it very helpful. Im still quite new at quilting and am going out today to by material for a baby quilt. Thanks for your help. And thanks for making it FREE. You're awesome, Penny. Liza Penny- I had just finished reading Joen Wolfram's "Color Play" that day and this webinar did a very good job of bringing all that information together for me. The notes I took in the webinar are now filed in the book. The next quilt I start, I'm going to put all this into practice. I'm fairly new to quilting and have mainly relied on kits for helping me choose colors. But now I'm ready to put my own colors together! Thanks! Carol Hi Penny: Well……….you outdid yourself…….. the webinar was outstanding….I finally have a clear understanding of tones, shades, pure etc. amazing, I have been confused for a very long time. I have Joen Wolfrom’s 3-in-1 Color Tool…it is the older version as one of my grandkids gave it to me a number of years ago. I have never used it as it intimidated me….(tough to teach an old dog a new trick!!) I guess because I am all self taught I question myself and these webinars are such wonderful resources. I have never been able to afford classes in this area so have always wondered if I was doing them correctly. I am gaining so much confidence from your webinars…. I was able to combine 2-3 colors, but after that would break out in hives fearing I’d “create a monster”….. Thank you for sharing your knowledge I’m certain many others were treated to “the light going on”!!!!!! Between the Fabricalc and my Joen Wolfrom Color tool I just might live long enough to use up my fabric stash!!!!! Hahaha This Great Grandma (4 times) is soooooooooooooooo happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you again….. Hugs, Carolyn I really enjoyed the seminar, Penny. Hopefully, I will be more adventurous with color! Abby Thank YOU for the very interesting webinar. I enjoyed it very much. I had never heard of the Ives Color Wheel, but that answers a lot of questions I had about why colors were like they are. I can see I need to do a lot more reading! Diane I enjoyed it very much and learned some more on why you select certain colors together Thanks for putting it on. Phyllis Your choosing colors for your quilts was facinating to me. Never realized color was so involved. I'm looking forward to the books on color your recommended. It's impossible to remember all the info you talked about even though I took notes. Thank you, Sharyn Hi Penny, Thanks for the very informative webinar on choosing colors. I feel like I learned a lot about color in quilts! I liked the format better, with questions and comments not coming until the end. It eliminated the background noises, as we in the audience don't seem capable of muting ourselves. : ) Thanks again, Teresa Dear Penny, I really enjoyed this Webinar on colors. I have painted with oils and acrylics, and did understand the mixing for shades, tones and tints. Since I am a beginning quilter, small projects so far, This was so very helpful. I always thought the colors were hard to choose for a quilt. But happy to see you also understand a designers license to play with unusual matching of colors. Thank you for putting this class together for us. Cecilia I am a newbie only 2 months but I learned a lot about colors and hope I can put your info to good use. Thank u for a well presented seminar, I was not bored I quess I got the quilters bug bad all I want to do is buy fabric and sew. Monica Penny, I enjoyed the webinar and learned a lot. I’m a new quilter so I appreciate all the pointers and info I can get. Thanks, Chris Thanks so much for presenting your "choosing colors for your quilts" webinar. I love your webinars, and look forward to any that you may present in the future. Thanks so very much!! Diane Penny, I want you to know how much I enjoyed the webinar last night. I have in the last couple of months or so bought several of your packages of DVD sets and books. I have enjoyed them also very much. They’re down to earth so you can understand how to do things and if I forget something I can go back on the dvd and look again. I had trouble getting on at first last night so I missed the first 15 minutes so I wanted to ask you where to get the Tool Maker that you can carry in your purse and wasn’t there a book also that you could purchase. I think I would be interested in both. Thank you and keep up the great work you’re doing Glenda |
Your time is worth something, isn't it?
By now, you are probably beginning to wonder how much this critical information about choosing colors for your quilts will be.
Well, put it this way.
You could do what I did - attend 14 weeks of workshops, complete home assignments (fun, but still time-consuming), create quilt blocks that end up in the trash because they are just examples of what "wrong" combinations look like, talk to expert quilters about their techniques for choosing colors, and read tons of books about color in quilts.
Most workshops, if you can find one in your area specifically about color and value cost $40-$50 per day. And times 14 actual days of workshops, means you’ll have about $700 plus more than 14 days invested in your quilting education.
Plus each workshop comes with homework assignments that consume both time and quilting resources.
And, although you’ll have your notes from the workshops and some hands-on experience, you’ll be back at your house and the teacher will go to her house, giving you no further access to her information, and having invested more than $700 in your education.
With Secrets for Choosing Perfect Colors for Your Quilts, you will have this information at your fingertips any time of the day or night you want it. No attendance at a class required. No hauling your machine or supplies. No extra investment of time or materials.
Plus, there are so many things to learn about choosing colors for your quilts, that even with 14 days of attending workshops, I learned a lot, but it took years to really understand what I had seen and done. And in order to get that additional information, I had to seek out other resources - since the teachers were gone and the information was given to me only during the classes.
With Secrets for Choosing Perfect Colors for Your Quilts - you'll have the video, audio and reports right in the comfort of your home – 24/7.
Or, you could get a pile of books. I have a bunch of books but only a few that are just about color and value. Most of the other information I learned about choosing colors for my quilts came from the 2-3 columns of information in quilting books that are about making quilts, not just about choosing colors.
There are probably about 5 resources that are devoted exclusively to choosing colors in quilts, in addition to about 20 that have pages of information about color and value on my bookshelves. In order to get all of that information, you'd need to have all 25 of the resources, and at an average cost of $19.95 (which is probably very low), that adds up to $498.75.
Plus, you have to count on understanding the information the way it is written in the book. What if you don’t get it and the pictures aren't all that descriptive?
Plus, we all know that the books make everything sound like it is simple. The authors generally assume that you are a quilter with some experience, and often the explanations are too general to understand exactly how it applies to your quilt or the pictures are of what I call "color blobs," not real fabric you might find in the fabric store.
With the videos in Secrets for Choosing Perfect Colors for Your Quilts, you get to watch the concept or technique while it is explained.
Don’t understand? Just replay it. Right then or days or months later when you need that specific information or are having a difficult time understanding why that green doesn't look right with the rest of the fabrics you have chosen.
Replay as many times as you like, with nobody peering over your shoulder asking you why you didn't understand the first time!
Every quilter has unique shortcuts and techniques that she has developed over time. The big difference is that I am happy to share mine! And because I am sewing exactly the way I sew when the camera is off, you get every inside tip and technique I have - including the mistakes and failed experiments with the corrections and suggestions for improvement.
Even though this video package includes tons of information about choosing colors for your quilts, we always like to include special goodies for our quilting friends. After all, you deserve the best!

Now you can get the benefit of that experience without the pain.
