Cornerstones are squares or patches that are used in the corners between blocks or in the borders of quilts.

The first time I used a cornerstone in a quilt was because I ran out of fabric and needed something to fill in the space. It turned out that the cornerstone was the amount of fabric I needed and could finish the quilt.

The next time was when I was using Flying Geese as the border. The question arose about what to do in the corner. Instead of running the Geese into each corner, I decided to sew a square patch in the corner.

Your cornerstones can be simple squares of fabric or patches. In the pictures of the quilts below you will see a variety of cornerstones I have used and a brief description of why each was used.

The easiest cornerstones are simple squares.

In this quilt, I used painted fabric squares in each corner to avoid having the Flying Geese run into the corners.

The border of this quilt is fairly wide, so I decided to use 4 small blocks in the corner.

There are several cornerstones in this quilt.

In the corners of the Flying Geese surrounding the bears, I have used small pieced trees.

Another interesting effect is to sew an inside narrow border that surrounds the center of the quilt top. Then use cornerstones in your outside border.

I ran out of the blue fabric for the border, and used the white squares in the cornerstones in order to finish the quilt.
