Faux Pieced Sashing

Your blocks can range from the very simple to the very complex, and they will still benefit from sashing.

Sashing is what goes between the blocks in a quilt. Like quilt blocks, sashing can be very simple or it can be as complex as your quilt blocks. And some quilts have no sashing at all.

In this series of articles, you will see a wide range of sashing ideas. Many of them are a part of quilts I have made. In some cases, the photos are old (as are the quilts) and discolored. If I had the quilts, I would take new pictures, but most of my quilts have been given away, and what I have are the old, discolored pictures and the great feeling that those quilts are in the hands of someone who is enjoying them!

Faux Pieced Sashing

It's always fun to create a quilt that looks like something that it isn't. Pictured below are blocks that look like they have pieced sashing between them. To make this as sashing, you would make a series of half-square triangles, and then sew 2 together, and add a solid square.

Once you have several of these units, sew them together in a strip the length you need in order to fit between your blocks.

In this example, there are two strips of pieced sashing between the blocks. Probably the easiest way to sew this would be to surround each block with sashing, and then sew the blocks together.

This looks like pieced sashing.

But, really, the blocks here are small Bear Paw Quilt Blocks. The picture below shows each of the "real" blocks in the quilt. The sashing, in fact, is just solid blue fabric with cornerstones.

Each Bear Paw faces a different direction. The sashing is then added as you would make Sashing with Cornerstones.

The resulting blocks can be sewn together as shown in the first picture above so they look like blocks with pieced sashing.
