Log Cabin Trees

It’s always fun to make a quilt for the holidays. And this quilt can be for most any holiday.

Plus, this one is easy to make.

Years ago, I made this as a wall hanging for Christmas time, and used holiday fabrics to make it fit the season.

But, this could be equally effective as a Fall or Spring quilt in any size.

It is similar to a Log Cabin pattern with each block set on point.

This is the basic block.

Let me walk you through how it is "built."

It all begins with a half-square triangle and a unit that has the "trunk" piece surrounded by small triangles.

The easiest way to make this is to sew strips together: background - trunk - background. And then cut the half-square triangle from that.

Yes, there will be a little extra fabric, but probably worth it.

Next add, strips onto the outside of the center square.

These will be gree and extend the full length of the center square with the trunk in it.

Next add green pieces onto the outside, just as you would if you were making a log cabin quilt block.

One difference - instead of having the green extend the full side of the square, shorten it and replace it with your background fabric.

The length of the background fabric on the end of the green "log" should be about equal to the width of the log.

Add another row of "logs" to the outside of the block.

This time, double the length of the background fabric at the end of the log.

This will give your block a "stair-step" look - creating the branches of the tree.

Finally, surround the entire block with "logs" of your background fabric.

Make as many as you like and sew them together into a quilt.

The great part about this quilt block is that you can make it whatever size you want.

Decide how wide you want your strips and the trunk of the tree and go from there.

You can sew background and tree strips together and then cut units off into the "log" shapes to add onto the blocks as you build them.
