Attention Quilters! Now you Can Learn the Basics of Hand Quilting and Piecing from an Expert - Alex Anderson

Here's your chance to spend 90 minutes with one of the most popular quilters of all time. Listen to her secrets for creating beautiful quilts, and Ask Her Your Burning Question

From: Penny Halgren
Date:

Greetings,

There’s a reason I stick with hand quilting – it’s because I’m so bad at machine quilting.  You’d think that with 26 years of quilting under my belt, I would have mastered machine quilting, but far from it.

Oh it’s not for lack of trying.  I’ve even followed tips from expert machine quilters:

  • Use Safety pins to “baste” your quilt
  • Use 100% cotton thread for the top and bobbin
  • Or possibly use nylon in your bobbin so it won’t show as much
  • To begin stitching, pull the bobbin thread up through to the top of the quilt, and then stitch “in place” six times to secure the thread
  • Use both hands to guide the quilt through the machine
  • Look ahead of where you are stitching, not at the needle or presser foot
  • Keep the quilt off of the floor, so it will glide through the machine more evenly
  • Accordion-fold the excess parts of the quilt to ease it through the machine
  • Stabilize the layers by stitching a grid using the sashing as a guide
  • When quilting straight stitches, use a walking foot
  • Drop your feed dogs for free motion quilting (Are you kidding?  I can’t even do straight stitching right, why would I try free motion quilting?)

Maybe it’s because I never coated my fingers with rubber cement and let it dry to help my grip on the quilt.

Or maybe it’s because I didn’t use the bicycle clips on the rolled up sides of my quilt as I feed it through the machine.

Possibly if I had used dark fabric on the quilt top and light fabric on the back, and then did my machine quilting with the back side up, I would have been more successful.

Whatever the reason, I haven’t been able to figure out how to machine quilt without puckers and mountains. And that is OK for now.

Maybe 10 years from now I will wish I had become serious about machine quilting, but for now, I like the look of my hand quilted quilts - even if they aren't perfect.

Yet, I do want to improve my hand quilting skills. Do You?

After last week's call with Dierdre McElroy, I pulled out some of my hand quilted quilts that I was especially proud of. Thinking that I would be able to measure some respectable number of hand quilting stitches to the inch, I proudly rested my ruler next to a line of stitching.

Well, maybe the stitches looked even, but there were only 8 stitches to the inch! Maybe my ruler was off - - but, probably not. It's obvious I need some help.

And, my mom always said, when you want to learn something, ask an expert.

And now we have our chance.

Next Tuesday, December 10, Alex Anderson will join our Eavesdropping Quilters in our very popular Eavesdrop on a Telephone Conversation series.

Alex has been inspiring beginner quilters for years with her down-to-earth style of teaching and her great sense of fun.

Years ago, her book, Hand Quilting with Alex Anderson was a hit. And quilters today are still learning how to hand quilt with Alex's book.

Nine Patch News reviewed Hand Quilting with Alex Anderson, and said:
"The quilting stitch is not only explained, but there are wonderful photographs and drawings to help understand the concept, followed by binding and labeling information."

And next The Quilt Peddler chimed in and said:
"If you’ve ever wanted to hand-quilt, this is the must-have book to teach you how. Alex Anderson, host of television’s 'Simply Quilts, ' encourages you every step of the way. That’s no surprise—she’s known in the San Francisco Bay Area as an excellent teacher."

And then Wearable Art Connection wrote:
"Clear photographs of the three variations of hand quilting for both right- and left-handed people are an outstanding feature in the book."

The point is, Alex knows what she is talking about and has tips to share. She travels the country teaching beginner quilters how to piece and hand quilt. As a matter of fact, Alex is so busy, it took me 8 months to track her down and get a date for this call.

You will definitely want to be there, because this may be our only chance to pick the brain of this fantastic quilter. It all begins at 5pm Pacific Time, 6pm Mountain Time, 7pm Central Time, and 8pm Eastern Time.

Tips for getting started including selecting tools and notions, choosing fabrics, and creating a workspace and design wall

And this hour and a half will be jam-packed with the best from Alex.

Because you need to have a quilt top before you can quilt, we'll start with Piecing Tips, and Alex will share her:

  • Tips for getting started including selecting tools and notions, choosing fabrics, and creating a workspace and design wall

  • Tricks for accurate cutting, pinning, piecing, and pressing

  • Ideas for settings, borders, and sashing to make your quilts one-of-a-kind

Whether you are making a quilt for a baby or a beautiful quilt to hang on a wall, Alex's tips will help you create a quilt to love.

Using her tips, your seams will match, your corners will be square, your triangle tips will be pointy, and your curves will be smooth.

Once the quilt top is complete, it's time to quilt.

When Alex studied with Lucy Hilty, a well-known Mennonite quilter, she discovered incredible opportunities for creating beautiful hand quilting designs - well beyond just the straight stitch-in-the-ditch quilting.

And Alex will share practical skills and ideas with us in our Telephone Conversation:

  • how Alex chooses the color scheme for her quilts, and how I can choose colors that I love and look great in my quilt
  • how to match a color design or fabric with a quilt pattern, so I will be able to look at a fabric and know what the perfect block is
  • some critical detail techniques of sewing a quilt top, such as whether to pre-wash, how to press seam allowances, and how to keep the seams lined up as I sew
  • how to choose the perfect quilting design
  • what the best thread is for the job
  • techniques for perfect hand quilting - like, what kind of needle to use, the best quilting hoop, and how to use the hoop
  • and much, much more

I’m ready, are you?

Alex offers some great guidelines for choosing a quilting design for your quilt.

She will help us understand when to follow the print of a fabric with quilting stitches; quilt a grid or other overall pattern; mix curved quilting lines with straight stitches; and much more.

The best thing is that you can hear and learn all of this, and ask your personal question of Alex right in the comfort of your home - for free.

I don't know about you, but I think that is a great deal! After all, I paid about $300 to see her. And I didn't get to ask her MY question. I just got to hear what she wanted to say.

It was wonderful, and I learned a lot. But this is going to be even better because Alex will be answering our questions.

Time is short, so register for the FREE call right now - before you forget or before we run out of lines. I have reserved 100 lines for the first 100 quilters.

Alex has some excellent resources for beginner quilters, and even for more advanced quilters. You may want to pick them up to get even more of Alex's expertise.
